Of course the pie has gotten a lot bigger in the past 30 years and the middle class has not benefitted at all and is actually going backwards.

17. In what way do the interests of a shepherd and sheep diverge?

Jan 2016

Just sort of curious about the literal aspect of that.

If you are raising sheep for wool, then your interests seem to be minding the health and well being of the sheep, and seasonally shearing them.

I'm not aware of too many wild herds of sheep, so they apparently don't do well on their own.

I rather doubt that the sheep are terribly enthusiastic about be shorn or being killed and having their body parts consumed by shepherds (or, anything else).

Think we could safely call that a divergence of interests.

Thu Jan 7, 2016, 04:32 PM

...because they have been selectively bred to produce a buttload of wool, and if not shorn they become incapacitated eventually by a huge thick mat of it. It's like believing dairy cows don't like to be milked.

But please note that I said If you are raising sheep for wool...

Sad sheep:

Would you like to walk around blind and overheated all summer?

Happy sheep:

Furthermore, revenue from the wool keeps the farm running. No farm, no sheep. The well-being of the sheep is coupled to the well-being of the shepherd.

My comment was furthermore specifically directed to sheep raised for wool. But without protection from wolves, it really makes no difference whether they are raised for meat, since absent the shepherd they are going to be a meal sooner than later.

Now, a word about alpacas...

There are not many wild sheep (I imagine there are some mountain relatives of them, but I am not a zoologist).

Given that wolves and other predators would make quick work of sheep, the shepherd certainly seems like the less of two evils, since the wolves are not going to wait around and fatten them.

If you ever visit New Zealand, you'll rapidly get the impression the sheep have a pretty good deal. They practically own that country.
