http://www.secretservice.gov/about/faqs/ explains that the decisions on this are made by the secretary of the DHS, so you could try tweeting to Jeh Johnson to ask about it. Perhaps Bernie does not wish to have a secret service security detail because it would conflict with his 'man of the people' image at this stage of his candidacy, or he may have received so little heckling or hate mail that he doesn't feel any need for it.

6. Secret Service Protection
Mon Jan 11, 2016, 07:55 PM
Jan 2016
Presidential and vice presidential nominees and their spouses are to receive Secret Service protection within 120 days of a general presidential election under the Title 18, Section 3056 of the United States Code.

In modern history, however, major candidates receive Secret Service protection well before that time frame. In 2012, major Republican presidential candidates Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum received Secret Service protection early in the primary season.

Romney, a former Massachusetts governor and front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination, was the first to get Secret Service protection. He received it on Feb. 1, 2012, before more of the states held their primaries and caucuses.

Santorum, a former U.S. senator, received coverage on Feb. 29, 2012, according to published reports that cited federal officials with knowledge of the plan. And Gingrich, a former House speaker, got Secret Service on March 7, 2012.

Ron Paul, the Republican presidential hopeful popular among libertarians, declined Secret Service protection. The Texas congressman described Secret Service protection as a form of welfare.

"You know, you’re having the taxpayers pay to take care of somebody. I’m an ordinary citizen. I would think I should pay for my own protection. And it costs, I think, more than $50,000 a day to protect those individuals. That’s a lot of money," Paul said.

She is the spouse of a former POTUS. She automatically gets secret service coverage.

So stop making shit up.

BTW, I will be voting for Bernie in the MI primary, so folks don't need to paint me as a HillaryBot. I guess one could correctly paint me as a DemocratBot, as opposed to any alternative, all of which are horrible.

I will support and vote for any Democratic nominee.

I found out the hard way that no matter how many posts I have in favor of my candidate, there are posters who still don't get it. Although I'm a HRC supporter, but I prefer not to use a Hill friendly avatar.

That said, I salute you for your courage.

He hasn't asked for Secret Service protection, so that's the only possible explanation that fits into the outrage-provoking category.

Secret Service protection is not automatically provided to primary candidates. They must meet certain criteria and then request it. Based on the criteria, it appears that Sanders is entitled to protection, if he requests it but he hasn't asked for it yet.

I doubt the petition will have any effect if Sanders doesn't want Secret Service protection. They should be petitioning the Sanders campaign to request it.
