"Plus" size? Are you kidding me? This may be a move in the right direction for Ralph Lauren, but calling her a "plus" size? Really?
Today, the average American woman is 5'4?, has a waist size of 34-35 inches and weighs between 140-150 lbs, with a dress size of 12-14. And this woman is 6'2"!
Im 6'2".
And do you mind telling me how much you weigh?
Well, Lawley said, pausing, Im a size 12and I dont think weight really matters. It was a halting start to an otherwise fluid interview.
We asked Lawley about it afterwards. I was surprised, she said of the weight question. Sometimes models are likened to race horses. If I say my weight, people are going to target me, and they dont know my BMI. I think its best not to include.

(115,103 posts)I have heard that 14 is where "plus size" starts... maybe they're trying to change that.

(110,159 posts)it was a good interview what was said, but the plus size crap. every thing the model said, worked for me.
i am lucky. i didnt know when i was younger. i do now. i am taller... and big boned and it allows me to carry more weight, continuing with slim. people always want to put me in smaller sizes, but... since all our bodies are individual, there is no norm. what i look and what i am, is not the same. that is how it is with this woman. she is not the stick we see. but, she is certainly not plus. that is the ridiculous in this piece. though... i did like how the person asking the questions continually said... normal/average women.

(36,446 posts)At least, that was my personal standard when I was overweight. Even now, though, I would be considered a plus size - I wear a 14, sometimes even a . . . 16! Gasp! But I definitely have a waist line, something I was missing for several years.
When I was a kid size 5 was the smallest there was. Now there is a size 1 & I wonder when there will be a size 0 & -1. Women's obsession over a stupid number is weird. I don't get it. I've seen friends put a pair of jeans that look fantastic on them, back on the rack because it was a size 10 instead of an 8.
I ask, "Do you think I'm fat?"
"No."
"I wear a size 14!"
"But you look great in your jeans."
"You look great in those jeans!"
"But they're a size 10."
