Historian Mary Beard suffers 'truly vile' online abuse after Question Time

http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2013/jan/21/mary-beard-suffers-twitter-abuse

TV presenter and academic Mary Beard has said she has become the victim of a torrent of "truly vile" abuse online of the kind that would "put many women off appearing in public" following an appearance on BBC1's Question Time.

Beard, professor of classics at Cambridge University, who recently presented the BBC2 programme Meet the Romans with Mary Beard, said that the abuse followed an exchange with an audience member on the panel show on Thursday about the effect of immigration on services in the Lincolnshire town of Boston.

The Question Time exchange – in which Beard cast doubt on some stories about strains on public services – has prompted an online backlash and introduced Beard to what she described in her blog for the Times Literary Supplement as "a side on internet trolling that I haven't experienced before" and one that is "truly vile".

Explaining why she is refusing to laugh off the comments she writes: "First, the misogyny here is truly gobsmacking … the whole "c***" talk and the kind of stuff represented by the photo … is more than a few steps into sadism. It would be quite enough to put many women off appearing in public, contributing to political debate, especially as all of this comes up on Google."

and really, men can be proud. you know, we do have many argue here that using these terms are not offensive, after all, they pretty much are all gender neutral anyway, or we own them or or or.

when i hear men on du do this, and i do not see men tell other men to knock it the fuck off, well.

ya. men can be proud.

a woman dare to speak up and this is a result. just a means toward humiliation to shut a woman up. just another tool for men. BUT... anonymously cause they are too cowardly to say it face to face. they would likely actually feel shame.

Ugh. Nasty little Internet creepers. We need a pesticide.

I found this article , a great opinion piece

Hidden Misogyny: Why the Menimists should take stock.

Mary Beard was horribly attacked the other day after daring to voice her opinions in public. An expert in various fields she dared to offer her thoughts and was met without surprise with a host of online abuse. Discussion and arguments are one thing, hateful abuse is another. Being told what sexual abuse you deserved, how your appearance was to your detriment and how being a woman meant your views have no merit is no surprise to many public women. Even on twitter those who are vocal and seek to effect change my publically challenging the status quo are subject to hateful comments that are sexist and abusive.

You may expect this of right wing trolls, their heads firmly in 1830 where they expect women to be seen and not heard. That’s never excusable but what of the ally? The men who pledge their support to the feminist cause? Are we any better?
