History of Feminism
Related: About this forumNew campaign uses real Google searches to expose how the world talks about women
The search function predicts and displays search terms based on the activity of other web users; the more popular a search term, the higher up it will be on the list of suggested searches.
As the campaign demonstrates, when you type in women need to, Google recommends searches for women need to be put in their place, women need to know their place, women need to be disciplined and women need to be controlled.

(41,921 posts)I got "to know their place" "to shut up" and to "be controlled" first three
Niceguy1
(2,467 posts)For men, either.
Men need to "feel needed" "to ejaculate" and lastly "to grow up" is what I got.

right
but... thanks for the insight there really is an issue here....
ismnotwasm
(41,921 posts)There most certainly is.
Control-Z
(15,681 posts)Women need to know their place, shut up, be controlled, be wanted.
Men need to feel needed, ejaculate, grow up, cheat.
ismnotwasm
(41,921 posts)I think it's worth mentioning in general that this is a United Nations campaign, not an American one.
Control-Z
(15,681 posts)is that most of the results (that I listed) sound to me like they were written by men. Either complaining about women or defending themselves. Though I have to admit I may be a tad jaded by the men I've had in my life. Lol.

(41,921 posts)Then, we live in interesting times where we are beginning to challenge dominant paradigm in many places, if only a whisper in places.
I am fortunate to have a good husband. I was trying to explain that "moterboarding" for breast cancer awareness deal to him, first I had to tell him what it was, he got this funny befuddled look on his face that I adore, and he laughed, and simply said "that's stupid". He knows breast cancer is far more than the physical appearance, presence--or absence--of breasts.

(41,921 posts)Not in a bad thing in and of itself--ejaculation has health benefits for men as well as the obvious, but I doubt that's what's being referenced
Squinch
(50,774 posts)know their place, go home and cook dinner, know about men, shut up
Ewwwwwww......
And I got men need to feel needed, ejaculate, grow up, cheat.
Equally ewwwwww......
ETA:
For "women cannot" I got be trusted, speak in church, have it all.
Very depressing
I meant to edit; you're "eww" comments were funny, the searches are depressing

(41,921 posts)This is a UN campaign. Also this is a feminist group so necessarily we are going to discuss feminist issues
I kinda agree with number four there though

(2,467 posts)Just Google searches
cats should not eat
cat should not eat fish
Cats should not be pets...
ismnotwasm
(41,921 posts)Ok? Just knock it off. We don't do feminism 101 here, and if you're not aware that there is a global problem with attitudes toward women often leading to violence; or that women in many places don't have basic human rights, or that some of it is culturally ingrained and that these campaigns are used to raise awareness more than educate-- that's the next step--
This is really not a conversation you can add much to
seabeyond
(110,159 posts)opportunity, no, i do not think niceguy give much shit about being "educated" but more about making sure no one is educated about this crap cause it may effect his privilege and entitlement. he truly is the "niceguy" lol

(37,748 posts)I think they spent just enough to get you engaged in an attempt to invalidate the premise, which you then failed at, so then you simply decided that thinking about was just too darn hard.
Seems it worked.

(2,670 posts)As guys the way other men talk about women should be of great importance to us. It's important to eliminate thoughts like "women can't be trusted" and "women need to be controlled". The only way to do so is to identify and eliminate that thinking within the population it's not always comfortable to address but nothing worth doing is.

Thank you. (Not that I hold out much hope it will actually be heard by those that need to hear it, this shit still needs to be said.)

(41,921 posts)It's fairly weird. Do they just want a reaction?
I know this is a bit trite and Freudian but Mommy or Daddy issues perhaps?

so, i went to google about the misogynist that use "feminist hate men" to derail argument. all i got was feminist hate men, .... not that it is an absurd derailment to shut women up.

(570 posts)What does Google use to determine who gets what suggestions?
women need to
women need to shut up
women need to grow up
women need to be wanted
women need to be safe
women need
women need more sleep
women need men
women need affection
women need attention
I got
Women need more sleep
Women need men
Women need to shut up
Women need to know their place
Women need to shut up
Women need to be controlled
The results depend on verbs prepositions and/or conjunctions I'm guessing
But it seems that two different people can put in the exact same start of a search, such as "women need" and get different suggestions on how to finish the phrase. Is Google selecting those different suggestions based on your prior searches, what searches are common in your geographic location, etc? It might be revealing to know if the suggestions are mainly influenced by the individual's search history or other meta data.
ismnotwasm
(41,921 posts)Which is why this is a UN campaign and not an American one. It's certainly not science, but the results call attention toward common attitudes toward women that cause harm.
If, in America we put 'women need' anytime around say Christmas or Valentines day, I would expect different results.
