New campaign uses real Google searches to expose how the world talks about women

A new campaign out from UN Women uses Google autocomplete to expose the sexism and misogyny that continues to characterize how we talk about women.

The search function predicts and displays search terms based on the activity of other web users; the more popular a search term, the higher up it will be on the list of suggested searches.

As the campaign demonstrates, when you type in “women need to,” Google recommends searches for “women need to be put in their place,” “women need to know their place,” “women need to be disciplined” and “women need to be controlled.”

Men need to feel needed, ejaculate, grow up, cheat.

is that most of the results (that I listed) sound to me like they were written by men. Either complaining about women or defending themselves. Though I have to admit I may be a tad jaded by the men I've had in my life. Lol.

Then, we live in interesting times where we are beginning to challenge dominant paradigm in many places, if only a whisper in places.

I am fortunate to have a good husband. I was trying to explain that "moterboarding" for breast cancer awareness deal to him, first I had to tell him what it was, he got this funny befuddled look on his face that I adore, and he laughed, and simply said "that's stupid". He knows breast cancer is far more than the physical appearance, presence--or absence--of breasts.

Ok? Just knock it off. We don't do feminism 101 here, and if you're not aware that there is a global problem with attitudes toward women often leading to violence; or that women in many places don't have basic human rights, or that some of it is culturally ingrained and that these campaigns are used to raise awareness more than educate-- that's the next step--

This is really not a conversation you can add much to

I think they spent just enough to get you engaged in an attempt to invalidate the premise, which you then failed at, so then you simply decided that thinking about was just too darn hard.

Seems it worked.

As guys the way other men talk about women should be of great importance to us. It's important to eliminate thoughts like "women can't be trusted" and "women need to be controlled". The only way to do so is to identify and eliminate that thinking within the population it's not always comfortable to address but nothing worth doing is.

women need to be wanted
women need to be safe

women need

women need more sleep
women need men
women need affection
women need attention

Women need to be controlled

The results depend on verbs prepositions and/or conjunctions I'm guessing

But it seems that two different people can put in the exact same start of a search, such as "women need" and get different suggestions on how to finish the phrase. Is Google selecting those different suggestions based on your prior searches, what searches are common in your geographic location, etc? It might be revealing to know if the suggestions are mainly influenced by the individual's search history or other meta data.

Which is why this is a UN campaign and not an American one. It's certainly not science, but the results call attention toward common attitudes toward women that cause harm.

If, in America we put 'women need' anytime around say Christmas or Valentines day, I would expect different results.
