Ok, I am completely in love with the movie Frozen

So, I am probably a bit late to the party, and I know this is probably the point where I get reminded "Disney bad", but I have have to say, I have recently fallen for this movie and the main song, Let It Go. This is a genuinely beautiful and yes, truly feminist fairy tale.

Spoiler Warning:

The two main characters are sisters- Princesses, one of whom grows up to be the Queen and who has magical powers that she has been taught her whole life to suppress, which not surprisingly doesn't work out so well. It is only by accepting and embracing who she is that she can truly be free and come into her own. Not only that, but the true love in the tale is explicitly not the romantic one (there are two potential love interests for the younger sister) but the love the two sisters share. That's what ends up saving the day.

My inner kid just loves this movie.

Cause they're pretty awesome:

The snow glows white on the mountain tonight
Not a footprint to be seen
A kingdom of isolation,
And it looks like I’m the queen.

The wind is howling like this swirling storm inside
Couldn’t keep it in, heaven knows I tried

Don’t let them in, don’t let them see
Be the good girl you always have to be
Conceal, don’t feel, don’t let them know
Well, now they know

Let it go, let it go
Can’t hold it back anymore
Let it go, let it go
Turn away and slam the door

I don’t care
What they’re going to say
Let the storm rage on,
The cold never bothered me anyway

It’s funny how some distance
Makes everything seem small
And the fears that once controlled me
Can’t get to me at all

It’s time to see what I can do
To test the limits and break through
No right, no wrong, no rules for me
I’m free

Let it go, let it go
I am one with the wind and sky
Let it go, let it go
You’ll never see me cry

Here I stand
And here I'll stay
Let the storm rage on

My power flurries through the air into the ground
My soul is spiraling in frozen fractals all around
And one thought crystallizes like an icy blast
I’m never going back,
The past is in the past

Let it go, let it go
And I'll rise like the break of dawn
Let it go, let it go
That perfect girl is gone

Here I stand
In the light of day
Let the storm rage on,
The cold never bothered me anyway!

I liked both, exactly because they were departures from the typical Princess tale.

In Brave, it was the Mother/Daughter relationship that drove the story. In Frozen, it was the relationship between the two sisters.

I found both stories much more interesting than typical Disney fare.

She's seen it multiple times and got her boyfriend to take her. He said, "As long as it's not a musical!" "Oh no it's not." she said. I haven't seen it yet but I think it is one song after another.

We will probably buy the DVD twice - once for us and once for her.

they've been singing the songs non-stop. We saw it three times in the theater (once was a sing-along) and then got it on iTunes as soon as it was available. And we have the soundtrack.

My little one said that it has her favorite kind of princess: a rescuer princess.
