"Young men need to be socialized in such a way that rape is as unthinkable to them as cannibalism."

"Young men need to be socialized in such a way that rape is as unthinkable to them as cannibalism."

- Mary Pipher, Reviving Ophelia

What a powerful quote. That is what we are working towards. That is the way young men should be raised, by their parents, their relatives, the society they live in.

who thought that some girl should have sacrificed herself so that the Isla Vista shooter didn't kill anyone, should be told that they have been chosen to sacrifice themselves the next time someone gets an urge to eat human flesh. It's not like it's fatal; they can just amputate a foot, so that the cannibal gets a nice juicy thigh.....

They are completely incapable of reasoning when they see a post by you, and they fear you and loathe you in equal parts, I think. It is quite scary, and you are the more to be admired for being able to keep going in spite of them.

They actively resist changing our culture to one where rape is seen as on par with cannibalism. Some women too, of course, but too many men think teaching young men anything positive about women is wrong. It is mind-blowing, and it makes it even more incredible when we encounter situations where men teach boys and young men feminist values.

You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Wed Sep 24, 2014, 01:04 AM, and the Jury voted 1-6 to LEAVE IT.

Juror #1 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: Cannibalismo is reprehensible. Almost as bad as being a Cubs fan.
Juror #2 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: People need to stop being so petty on this discussions. I am not having a problem with the comments.
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Perhaps the alerter should find less provocative threads to read.
Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #7 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: He didn't say he'd murder. Just eat the bodies laying around? Whatever.... I think this was simply an anti rape post gone strange.

Thank you very much for participating in our Jury system, and we hope you will be able to participate again in the future.

And that battering and rape were serious crimes and the perpetrators belonged in prison or worse.

Media has now made an art of it and a game to see who wins by scoring their acts. I'd like to ask them what prize do they really think they are getting, hurting another human being, but I think I know the answer.

Fortunately, young males I know IRL aren't sick like that, don't accept that way of thinking. As to those who do, they'd tell me to STFU, and it makes you wonder, reading their online rants about feminists, what they are doing IRL. I don't expect personalities to change much when they have left the keyboard. JMHO.

20. Kind of OT but I'm rereading this book and found this ancient poem about Eve
Tue Sep 23, 2014, 04:23 PM
Sep 2014

Written by the eventually suppressed gnostic cult, the book explores how sexual mores became ingrained, before and after Christianity took over the Roman Empire The gnostic's were many sects-- not uniform at all, but a surprising number revered Eve as wisdom.

“An extraordinary gnostic poem called Thunder: Perfect Mind depicts the spirit, manifested variously as Wisdom and as Eve, speaking as follows:
I am the first and the last.
I am the honored one and the scorned one.
I am the whore and the holy one.
I am the wife and the virgin.
I am the bride and the bridegroom,
and it is my husband who begot me.
I am knowledge and ignorance …
I am foolish and I am wise …
I am the one whom they call life [Eve]
    and you have called Death.…”

Wed Sep 24, 2014, 04:09 AM

If we managed to change our culture to the point where a majority of people felt as much revulsion about sex without enthusiastic consent from both parties as we do today for eating human flesh, we would have really managed to advance. Today, we make all sorts of excuses for rape, or blame the victim, or argue that it wasn't rape, and even many of the victims of rape decide whether they were raped based on the perceived intent of the rapist ('He was drunk, he didn't realize what he was doing.' 'He is my boyfriend, so he must have misunderstood.')

No, I find the comparison very apt. We want rape to be as unacceptable as cannibalism. As simple as that.

but there was a story going around the 'net the other day, by a woman who heard a man saying that a provocatively dressed woman should expect to be raped. "It'd be like putting a steak in front of a dog, and expecting him to not eat it."

She went home, put a steak on the floor, and told her dogs, "No." One dog didn't approach. The other needed to be told, "No," a second time, but did leave it alone until she picked it up and ate it herself. Her conclusion is that the men the man she had heard talking about were less well-socialized than her dogs, and should probably be neutered and kept on a leash.
