So I took a really bad fall a week ago Sunday.

I was carrying a box of heavy books upstairs & my toe clipped the edge of the stair & down I went. I smashed my face into the stair rail & for most of the week I've had quite a shiner & two other dark bruises on my face. I've also got huge bruises on my left shin & knee, which I wrenched in some way & has been more painful than my face, but no one sees those. I was surprised to discover there is a real stigma. People assume I was beaten. I've gotten looks of sympathy, a woman handed me a card to a support group for domestic abuse. My husband has gotten dirty looks a few times, too. How sad that abuse is so prevalent that it is the first assumption people make. Honestly, I'm not sure some of my friends, who don't know my husband, aren't convinced.

Anyway, I'll be glad when it's all healed & hope the library appreciates that book donation!

1. Wow I'm so sorry

I hope your recovery is quick

That's interesting about the reaction, it's so sad people feel so awkward, we don't want to cross the boundary of 'none of our business' vs 'do we need to do something'

I'm glad the woman gave you the card.

My daughter during her first pregnancy with her husband, said that certain midwives tried to exclude him. He is a former soldier, has a bit of PTSD, and he did hover over my daughter and that first baby--but he's a great Dad and awesome husband. I think the midwives who were doing this made some assumptions about both my daughter and SIL based on his protectiveness, and her gender. (My daughter is also a former soldier)

2. I tripped running down the stairs one day and fell flat, mashing my glasses to my

face. People didn't look at me funny but at my glasses place the guy who fixed my frames wanted to know how it happened...evidently, they get people who have such accidents from being drunk...I told him that it was pure negligence on my part. I never run down the stairs any more. I hold on to our rails (we are handicap accessible for my husband's sake, but I am super careful now, too). It makes me feel secure to have those bars on both sides of the stairs...

4. Ugh! I hope you feel better soon!

I agree...stigma... weird isn't it?

Use some ice and take some Ibuprofen to help with that swelling and feel better soon!

5. I hope you feel much better soon.

Sounds very painful.

I had an accident and fell on my face once, and had the same reaction from people that you did. I found it quite bizarre and it made me very uncomfortable. Looking back, I think I should have felt good that people cared enough to get in my face about seeking help for abuse. If I had been abused that might have been a lifeline.

6. hey. bummer. right before christmas, i took a fall on the stairs.

tore my body up. my back and down the leg so bad, ... i wondered if it would heal or had to go to doctors. i am tired of paying so much money and nothing can actually be done, it just has to heal.

i totally took care of the areas, used antiflammation drugs, and sure enough, it has healed well. i can bend again. i was using the shopping cart to allow me to buy groceries, for a couple days right before christmas.

it has me rethinking a house with lots of stairs, everywhere, for every entrance.

but then, they are wonderful exercise too. lol

colorado houses almost exclusively have stairs.

how ya doing????

i got clipped on the side of the eye, from a door of a new car a decade ago. i had the same reaction. and each person that seriously asked, what happened, i appreciated.

they had the guts to ask, opening the door for conversation. they were concerned. i was happy to see it.

and i told them... i got hit by a car door.

i thought about it then. it is a good thing. ..... it is... a good thing.

a couple months ago, i ran into a door. literally. who the hell leaves a door half..... right where one steps to go thru. i mean. open those doors all the way. and do not leave them unexpectedly shut, i run into those too. just doesnt hurt as much.

i tend to look behind me as i am walking forward. i have to actually tell my brain. stop. you are not looking.

too funny. had huge swelling and bruise on the forehead a couple months ago. same thing.
