Trevor Noah is no Jon Stewart. Trevor Noah is a guy you block on Facebook

http://www.chicagotribune.com/lifestyles/ct-trevor-noah-tweets-disappointing-balancing-20150331-column.html

A day after the 31-year-old South African comedian was announced as Jon Stewart's replacement on "The Daily Show," his tweets have come under fire for being anti-Semitic and sexist.

"'Oh yeah the weekend. People are gonna get drunk & think that I'm sexy!' — fat chicks everywhere."

"A hot white woman with (rear end) is like a unicorn. Even if you do see one, you'll probably never get to ride it."

"Almost bumped a Jewish kid crossing the road. He didn't look b4 crossing but I still would hav felt so bad in my german car!"

I was feeling a bit disappointed that TDS will continue to be a boys club with the announcement of the new host. Now after reading some of Noah's tweets, it's as if Comedy Central has put a sign on the show "No Women Viewers Wanted." I will definitely oblige.

By Wendy Todd March 31 at 9:31 AM
Wendy Todd is a culture and race blogger and freelance writer living in St. Louis.

Noah might look like an enlightened choice, but his routines show he isn’t — his jokes often hinge on insulting African Americans.

Back in 2012, Noah made his first American appearance, on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.” The bulk of his routine was composed of jokes about black Americans. The United States, he said, was not “the America he was promised,” and “America has the credit of a black man.”

Then Noah joked that black people are misidentified as African Americans. “They’re not African, but we’ll play along,” he said, adding, “Many of them really try to connect with Africa, you know? Some of them have these African names. They’ll be like, ‘Yeah, yeah, that’s my girl Wanda, yeah, yeah. Yeah that’s right, that’s Dashiqua, or dat’s Taniqua.” Noah emphasized all this “hilarity” by using stereotypical B-Boy hand gestures to drive it home — because this is how all black people communicate, obviously. Leno’s predominantly white audience ate it up.

I wasn’t aware Wanda was supposed to be recognized as an African name. Though poet Sha’Condria Sibley recently pointed out in a video that some of our cultural names do have African roots or intentions, attempting to falsify African culture is probably not top of mind for most black parents when choosing names for their children. But regardless, what’s so wrong with wanting to connect with your African roots? And yes, I am African American. I’m an American of African descent. That’s how I define myself, as is my right. Noah finds this to be a source of comedy. Because he continues to separate himself from African Americans by his repeated use of “they” when making fun of us, Noah should go walk around St. Louis or Cleveland. He’d find out quickly that he’s not viewed any differently than us.

Hamblin: Are these jokes real or some kind of performance-art parody?

Kornhaber: That would be nice, if it turned out to be a parody of some sort. I guess. But it’d have to have been started back in 2009, which would make for a pretty long-running conspiracy. The first thing that strikes me about these tweets is just how inept they are as attempts at humor. They didn’t make me chuckle guiltily. They just made me embarrassed for him. Right?

Hamblin: Most of these are old, from four to five years ago, so maybe it was just his racism/sexism/anti-Semitic phase? Like Picasso had his Blue Period? A lot of comedians change dramatically as they get older. Louis CK wrote and directed the film Pootie Tang.

Kornhaber: Yeah, it's interesting to look at the timestamps. His more recent controversial tweets are, at least, attempts at jokes, not just repeating old stereotypes. The Bruce Jenner one from last month—not exactly enlightened but, meh, fine. #BeatsByDreidel in May of 2014 indulges some not-s0-helpful thoughts about Jews controlling the world, but actually is almost a punchline, at least. The older stuff is just such a fascinating glimpse at what makes bad humor bad—the idea that you’re doing something exciting by saying something offensive, when really you’re just outing yourself as a deeply unoriginal thinker who has a tragically commonplace obsession with Jews. Or you're outing yourself as the stereotype of a frat-bro when it comes to attitudes toward women. You have a little bit of a standup background, Jim. What do you make of this stuff?

17. 'Daily Show' Hire Trevor Noah Under Fire for Tweets Offending Jews, Women from Rolling Stone

Mar 2015
http://www.rollingstone.com/tv/news/trevor-noah-under-fire-for-tweets-offending-jews-women-20150331

Update: A spokesperson for Comedy Central has responded to the controversy in a statement, per The Hollywood Reporter: "Like many comedians, Trevor Noah pushes boundaries; he is provocative and spares no one, himself included. To judge him or his comedy based on a handful of jokes is unfair. Trevor is a talented comedian with a bright future at Comedy Central."

Just days after garnering praise from around the entertainment world, newly appointed Daily Show host Trevor Noah has come under fire for a handful of old tweets that take aim at Jews and women, The Wrap reports.

The tweets in question were posted at various times between 2009 and as recently as May 2014. Among the offending missives were, "Behind every successful Rap Billionaire is a double as rich Jewish man. #BeatsByDreidel," from 2014; "Messi gets the ball and the real players try to foul him, but Messi doesn't go down easy, just like jewish chicks," from 2012; and "'Oh yeah the weekend. People are gonna get drunk & think that I'm sexy!' — fat chicks everywhere," from 2011.

ByBRENDAN JAMESPublishedMARCH 31, 2015, 3:04 PM EDT 2076 Views

Trevor Noah, standup comedian and recently-announced successor to Jon Stewart, has written about 9,000 tweets. On Tuesday, a handful of them came back to haunt him.

Only a few hours after he was christened Stewart's replacement for "The Daily Show," Noah took heat for off-color jokes he made on Twitter about women and Jewish people.

The tweets, which reach as far back to 2009, contained several jokes at the expense of women, particularly overweight women and lesbians. Some played with subjects like stereotypes of Jews, and German hostility to Jews.

25. Trevor Noah's Bigoted Jokes Come Back To Haunt Him

Mar 2015
http://www.refinery29.com/2015/03/84751/trevor-noah-sexist-homophobic-jokes?source_utm=feed&utm_medium=rss

Trevor Noah is having a fantastic week. Yesterday, he was announced as Jon Stewart's successor on The Daily Show, a move that incited resounding cheers across the media. In recent years, Noah gained a significant following both for his stand-up comedy and his one man show, "Born A Crime," which chronicled his life as a a mixed-race child growing up in South Africa. No doubt, his is a vital and talented voice on the scene — but he hasn't always used it for sharp, intelligent commentary. In fact, like many comics, he's made his share of terrible jokes. Unfortunately for him, he made a lot of them on Twitter.

"Happy Women's Day ladies. Hope you all have a great day. Even you Caster," Noah tweeted last August, regarding Caster Semenya, the South African runner who was forced to undergo genetic testing regarding her gender after winning the gold medal in the 2009 World Championship. Fans rebuked him for the tweet and he simply replied: "I joke about everything."

Noah's tweets run the gamut from questionable to blatantly homophobic, transphobic, misogynist, anti-Semitic, and good old fat-girl jokes.

Samantha Bee, who was supposed to get it, jumped network ships with her husband. Personally I think they picked too quick. They could have had guest hosts, like maybe Rosie O donell one week, Denis leary the next week, and see who people liked. If they wanted a black host, Larry Wilmore (the surprise sleeper hit) could have gotten it.
