Twitter fails to remove 100 abusive misogynists

More than a hundred Twitter accounts that had been reported for sending abuse to high-profile women went on to post misogynist content again after the company failed to remove them.

Research has shown that nearly half of the accounts flagged over graphic sexist abuse sent to women including the Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai and the former US secretary of state Hillary Clinton went on to repeat the offence.

The Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH), a non-profit group, which conducted the research, said that Twitter’s failure to remove such accounts was “enabling and encouraging abusers to spew hate again”.

After reporting the accounts that posted abuse to these women, the CCDH noted that 253 of these accounts had still not been removed two months later.

I'm sure no one in this group thinks this only applies to Twitter. Reddit is probably the worst of them all. But in reality, none actually considers words like 'b*tch' and 'c*nt' to be hate speech.

Women are the only oppressed group for which hateful slurs are still widely considered to be socially acceptable. Anyone is free to use them and defend their use.

any "social media". It would please me greatly if they'd all just go away. I don't include DU in that category, of course.

And no, I don't find ANY abuse to be "socially acceptable". I definitely support your
original op here.

Whether you want to include it or not - it fits the basic definition of social media.

It's a heavily moderated, though for likeminded content. A place like Twitter is not heavily moderated (for good or bad).

Nobel Laureates getting hate speech….for??

Being too intelligent I guess? Being too intelligent and being a woman?

Yes, ofc. But also because The Hate is for any woman daring to be recognized as being more intelligent than the men in their basements who have nothing better to do than to prove their subfloor intelligence on the Twitter machine that permits them the delusion of these ridiculous texts…not even real writing… being meaningful.

Thanks for nothing Twitter.

It is so widespread and has poisoned so many minds that there are boards filled with young men talking about how damaging and addictive it is, and many young women are leaning towards radical feminism as a reaction to their experiences with porn sick men, and I am so, so very happy about that. So, bright side

I'm not sure what point you're trying to make, though. Does someone defending Cuomo and/or using the c word here somehow have some bearing on whether Twitter should get a pass for allowing misogynist content to stand? Because I certainly don't think so.

I will continue this comment in a separate reply, for reasons that will be explained. Watch this space.

I would personally be very pleased to see misogynistic slurs like the c word and the one that is used by dog breeders to refer to the female of that species be banned at DU as I don't think they serve any legitimate purpose here.

I'm putting this in a separate comment, because I voiced a similar entiment here once before and got "rewarded" by having my post hidden for "interfering with forum moderation." If someone alerts on this comment and it gets hidden, hopefully the previous one will be allowed to remain.

Went through this multiple times back in the day. Until society changes, it won't change. Most people on the left are ok with hate speech against women.

Have said it before but misogyny is just as commonplace on the left as the right, the only difference is where they want to place the boot on our necks. The right considers us private property, the left, public. The right wants to control our bodies with removal of bodily autonomy. The left wants to maintain the social acceptance of sexual objectification and commodification of female bodies (I say 'female' and not 'women's' because it's also targeted at preteens - e.g. 'barely legal' porn)

I missed it at the time. She apparently uses a homophobic slur freely, and when confronted about it she said something along the lines of as long as y'all are using the B word like you own it I will continue and not care about anyone complaining. She's a weird one but she has a good point here.

I wouldn't have done it that way. But I did point out the similarity to the N word. People still fought me. One excused the use of the C word by pointing out the rude one is a good writer. I still half tune him out when he's on Stephanie Miller's show.

He has stopped using it, though.
