A question about avatars

So I've noticed that some DU'ers have avatars that aren't among the preselected options from which I chose mine.

Are users allowed to upload their own avatar image after a certain number of posts? Or is it a privilege that comes with donating to the site? Or some other condition maybe?

Just read about the DU Star Memberships (which give users the ability to upload their own avatar images). Should have thought to check before posting. Sorry!
