Gun violence to rival Irma

I realize Irma's destruction is a catastrophe for Florida and some surrounding states, as well as its devastation to the Caribbean and Cuba. And everyone in the U.S. not effected hopes for the best for those in harm's way in cleaning up and putting their lives back together. But during this calamity there was more havoc raging throughout the rest of the U.S. in the name of gun violence. In the last 72 hours there were 217 incidents of gun violence, 74 deaths and 186 gun injuries. The Gun Violence Archive has documented this by incident and the report requires nine pages; NINE WHOLE PAGES OF GUN DEATHS AND GUN INJURIES.

Hurricane Irma victims have FEMA. Gun violence victims have, as far as federal help like FEMA...nothing. Congress, and now the newly elected Trump for President, have deserted these people in favor of Wayne Lapierre's National Rifle Assn. Yes, there are gun control groups like the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, but so far they haven't, even with superb efforts. And that is because the American public does not support their efforts. Until this happens, innocent people will die hourly at the hands of guns.

PBS commentator Mark Shields dusted up some controversy when he claimed that more people have been killed by guns in the US since 1968 than in our entire, bloody history of war. Since the Sandy Hook tragedy, proponents of stricter gun control and advocates for keeping things the way they are have thrown out persuasive facts and statistics to back up their perspectives, but Shields’ assertion caught the attention of Politifact, which did some digging into the claim.

Made on the December 21, 2012 edition of PBS NewsHour, Shields (who is a liberal and a gun control advocate) told host Judy Woodruff:

“You know, Judy, the reality is — and it’s a terrible reality — since Robert Kennedy died in the Ambassador Hotel on June 4, 1968, more Americans have died from gunfire than died in … all the wars of this country’s history, from the Revolutionary through the Civil War, World War I, World War II, in those 43 years…. I mean, guns are a problem. And I think they still have to be confronted.”

So is it true? Unfortunately, yes.

We are at war with ourselves, and we're losing.

Thanks for the input with some great information. Unfortunately all this data means diddly shit to those who can do something about it. But some day there will be the "one" that makes even the dead-beat public take notice. How many gun deaths will it take to get there? Too many, I'm sure.
