My thoughts on gun control and politics

This is just an opinion, but I can't reconcile my own rationality with the current situation of gun ownership. I have abasolutely NO IDEA on how to justify ANY use of ANY firearm other than by the government to prevent crime, or foreign invaders attacking minority Americans. To me, the ONLY solution, frankly, is a total ban on firearms.

Hunting, ostensibly justified as as a matter of "humanely controlling" animal population, should not be controlled by the citizenry, and for the most part banned, as real humane methods that don't involve killing can be implemented for animal control. Relocation, birth control/sterilization, even tracking can minimize or even eliminate the use of lethal force against our animal friends and family.

In addition, "self defense" is NOT a justified reason, because when the legal availability to own or even operate a firearm is negated, the ability for criminals to obtain such weapons is dried up, ensuring that homeowners would have as much use for a gun as a portable nuclear bomb. Great Britain and Australia are two countries who have proven this method works 100% of the time. Instead of promoting self-defense with lethal weaponry, we should be concentrating on redistributing wealth from rich to poor minority families anyway, which would eliminate the poverty that forces individuals to attack and rob others in the first place.

In short, there is no rational, human reason why anyone other than the State should own or even have limited access to firearms. If you are not for total repeal of all firearms, I frankly cannot even fathom how you could consider yourself a progressive, and I would even question your own Democratic Party credentials. More and more people are realizing that the NRA is nothing more than a front for wannabe Stormfront supremacists, and we need to shut it down hard and treat gun nuts in the same vein as the police now treat innocent minority people on the street.

This is my opinion, and I expect to get a lot of flack, but I can't imagine why a sane person would advocate the ownership of firearms. I really can't. What's amazing is that many here feel that its justified. (Of course, I have no idea why anyone could be a Republican or support conservatives, but that's a conversation to be had at a more appropriate time.)

I would love to support other people and movements that are working to this end, and that is why I'm posting here. I for one will call and email my state and US representatives with regularity until action is taken in this direction.

I'd love to see that, but don't think a total ban has a chance. The excuses gunners use are BS. Hoyt Oct 2017 #2

Just tighter restrictions.

You don't think criminals would use other weapons to rob, steal and murder If guns were banned?

Where would all those guns go should a ban occur? Prohibition ring a bell?

Only 6% of the population went hunting in the past 12 months, that's been consistent for several years. I'll bet most of them go to drink Scotch/Bourbon, talk crap (mostly white wing), and get away from the family. No one needs an semi-auto/assault style rifle to hunt.

Further, there is little reason for people to carry a gun in public.

The thing that absolutely ticks me off is that gunners -- even supposed Democrats -- act like it is perfectly OK to buy a crap load of guns; practice at the range to shoot people and even engage in urban warfare games; use bump stocks and high cap mags and God knows what else; introduce their kids to the gun culture early on; contribute to the NRA, other gun organizations, or contribute directly to candidates too afraid to take this issue on; promote more guns everywhere, even on DU; are more concerned with what type of guns mass murderers used so they can make sure they have one; carry rifle openly to racist and Nazi rallies, bash folks like you who probably far outnumber the gun nuts; and probably worse.

If Australia can all but ban guns and make it work, why can't we?

Good post.
