Mississippi open-carry gun law again blocked from taking effect
JACKSON, Miss. —A Hinds County judge issued a ruling Friday that extends a restraining order that is keeping the state's open-carry gun law from taking effect.
House Bill 2, which was passed earlier this year by the Mississippi Legislature and signed by Gov. Phil Bryant, allows residents to carry a gun in a holster without a permit. The bill's author said it is an extension of laws already on the books, while those who petitioned the court said it is unclear and could pose a risk to law enforcement.
Hinds County Circuit Court Judge Winston Kidd on June 28 blocked the law from taking effect on July 1. He extended the order on Monday and on Friday continued the injunction.
"Law enforcement officials will be required to enforce a vague law which will result in either the law enforcement officer's life being at risk or the general public's life being at risk," Kidd wrote in his ruling. "The court cannot identify any potential harm which might be caused to the state by granting the injunction."
