(Hawaii) Bill would target off duty officers who drink and carry weapons

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - "The smart law enforcement officer who's carrying a gun shouldn't be drinking period," Sen. Will Espero said.

He plans to write that into a bill next session. The idea for legislation comes after speculation that Christopher Deedy was drunk when he shot Kollin Elderts.

Espero wants it illegal for off-duty law enforcers to carry a gun when they drink alcohol.

Former prosecutor Peter Carlisle agrees. "I certainly include police officers. Police officers are required to be armed all the time, but the fact of the matter is they should not have any alcohol in their system when they're making decisions about pulling a gun and using it," he said.

So are they going to re-write HPD regs that police should be armed at all times? dkf Aug 2013 #1
Nothing complicated about re-writing department policies to reflect new law. Robb Aug 2013 #2
Well I know some cops and many drink all the time. dkf Aug 2013 #3
Do your friends drink on duty, too? Robb Aug 2013 #4

Or are they making it a requirement of the job that police never drink?

How does this work in their own home? Can they not drink at home?

Yet only this Federal bozo has pulled something like this.

Frankly I think my friends would prefer they not be obligated to intervene when off duty. If they want to change the duties of all cops because of one yahoo who isn't HPD then fine. But don't expect cops to provide any service to the community off duty.

Make it illegal to carry in public for citizens, and illegal for cops to carry if they've had even one drink?
No brainer?
