"Harvey" tonight!!!

James Stewart as Elwood P. Dowd
Josephine Hull as Veta (Academy Award!)

And a glorious supporting character cast, all over the top.

"Well, I've wrestled with reality for thirty-five years, doctor. I'm happy to state that I've won over it."

The evening wore on.

That's a really nice expression. With your permission I'll write that again.

The evening wore on.

I think I'll have another drink.
Another martini, if you please, Mister Cracker.

In this world, you must be oh so smart, or oh so pleasant. Well, for years I was smart. I recommend pleasant.

Elwood P. Dowd: Years ago my mother used to say to me, she'd say, "In this world, Elwood, you must be" - she always called me Elwood - "In this world, Elwood, you must be oh so smart or oh so pleasant." Well, for years I was smart. I recommend pleasant. You may quote me.

It is a wonderful sentiment.

And poor Ed Hickie. He was a bit spiffed tonight.

Elwood P. Dowd: Here, let me give you one of my cards. Now if you should ever want to call me, call me at this number. Don't call me at that one, that's the old one.

Great cast!

Wilson: [reading from an encyclopedia] "P O O K A - Pooka - from old Celtic mythology - a fairy spirit in animal form - always very large. The pooka appears here and there - now and then - to this one and that one - a benign but mischievous creature - very fond of rumpots, crackpots, and how are you, Mr. Wilson?" "How are you, Mr. Wilson?" Who in the encyclopedia wants to know?

The line about winning over reality is the best one in the movie. Stewart's delivery helped make it so.

was remade a couple of times on TV. Stewart and Helen Hayes did it for Hallmark. This one is from 1958 with Art Carney as Dowd.
