so, I decided to watch the movie on a replay this afternoon. The documentary showed a very emotional Hattie McDaniels winning her best-supporting actress award and had me boohooing too. The documentary was good--I've seen others, but this one was hosted by Christopher Plummer and had some great vintage footage.

Yeah, I've seen the movie a zillion times and likewise read the book many many times. It was of its time even if I understand fully and appreciate its criticism today.

And yeah, Ashley was a bit of a wimp. In reality, Rhett Butler aside, the strength in GWTW was in the women--Scarlett's mother, Ellen, in Scarlett, and Melanie-- and most assuredly in the character of Mammy.

Melanie and Rhett would have made a formidable pair. Leave conniving Scarlet and moldering Ashley to their own devices.

V. Leigh went from Clark Gable to Marlon Brando. In real life she was married to Laurence Olivier. Quite an actress and quite a woman.
