i have one movie that i always recommend to people. i don't recall it making a big splash when it came out, but i might have missed it. got shitty reviews. saw it much later when netfilx was discs.
just sticks to me.

1. Izo.

I didn't really care for it the first time I saw it, but I kept thinking about it, and I watched it again and really liked it. I have watched it a bunch of times now and it's one my favorite movies.

It's about a samurai who is ordered to kill everyone. He is crucified for his crimes, and starts to travel forwards and backwards through time against his will, but he keeps trying to kill everyone.

It is extremely violent. Here is a trailer.

4. Seconds (1966)

Directed by John Frankenheimer, starring Rock Hudson as a man who throws away his boring, middle-aged life to start over, thanks to an innovative medical procedure. It was virtually ignored when it was released but has developed a following thanks to television reruns. I haven't watched it in years, but think of it quite often. IMDB members rank it 7.7 on their 10-point scale.

Another one that never leaves me is La Jetee, a "short" french film from 1962 about time travel, the inspiration for 12 Monkeys. It is mesmerizing, to say the least. 8.4 on the IMDB ranking.

5. "The Lives of Others" (2006)

Set in 1984 East Berlin, involves a STASI agent's spying on a noted playwright and his actress girlfriend. Brilliant movie; best cinematic depiction of living in totalitarian conditions that I've come across. Any time I notice it coming on cable TV, I end up watching it, yet again.

Such a strange, surreal film... I only saw it once some years ago, but I've always felt like I needed to see it again.

It was a total surprise, my youngest son turned me on to it - "You've got to see this movie, mom!"

While Johnny Depp is definitely a pleasure to behold, I love, love, LOVE Gary Farmer with all my heart!

Every time I watch "Dead Man", I see something new.

I thought, My, this is something different. It wasn't just the story but the blackouts between scenes (IIRC). I enjoyed it, especially the ending.

FREEEEEEkkky! Very disturbing movie, but very engrossing. About people growing up in a mysterious boarding school. It takes a while to figure out what the mystery is and then it gets very weird. It came out in 2010 and I still think of it.

18. The Deer Hunter

You know how there's chatter as a movie empties out, people discussing why they did or didn't like the movie?

I saw The Deer Hunter during a limited engagement in Manhattan when it was first released. As the movie emptied out, there was an eerie silence, like nothing I'd ever experienced before or have since. The movie was that powerful.

It is unquestionably one of the best and most powerful movies I've ever seen, but I'll never see it again. I just wouldn't be able to do it. It is a movie which everyone should see. But it isn't a movie that lends itself to repeated viewings. At least it wasn't for me.

It's still with me today, 35+ years after the fact. I will never forget it.

Immerse yourself in the Vietnam War (Hollywood version).

Oliver Stone's "Platoon." Most vets said this was real close to Viet Nam experience. But it is way more than that.

Then, travel to the heart of darkness with Coppola's "Apocalypse Now." His wife's documentary about making the movie won an Oscar!

Even deeper into the surreal of course is Cimino's "The Deer Hunter."

And top it all off with Kubrick's "Full Metal Jacket."

Each of these movies will stick in your head forever.

Francis Ford Coppola wanted to meld the Joseph Conrad story with the Vietnam War. So "Apocalypse Now" follows that theme when modern "civilized peoples" go back deep into the jungle, into the uncivilized nether regions, and how it changes us.

And the lesson goes on.

Jennifer Lopez was in the news, and I will always associate her with one of the most visually arresting movies ever made, with Vince Vaughn and our old buddy Vincent D'Onofrio.

I can't think of anything quite like it.

Obviously, it doesn't qualify as a "movie you can't get out of your mind" for me, since it had completely slipped my mind all these years later.

But I'm glad you brought it up, since I did see it way back when, and I can remember finding it intriguing - and certainly unusual. As I remember it, Jennifer Lopez was absolutely gorgeous in that movie, and her performance was excellent.

Can't say it stuck with me, though. I just remember that I thought it was cool and interesting at the time. I would not be adverse to giving it another look, however.

But she keeps popping up in the headlines, and I always relate this movie to her - she was good in it.

"What Dreams May Come" with Robin Williams is another movie with stunning visuals like in "The Cell."

I have seen a lot of movies, and some stay with you forever.

"Donnie Darko" has it all: great cast, great music, and it will stick with you when it is over. It is a classic cult film so you can go way down the rabbit hole if you like it and want to google answers to your questions

40. 'Le Bal' and 'Divorcing Jack'

Le Bal - a 1983 film with no dialogue that follows a ballroom in France for 50 years. Many actors play multiple roles brilliantly. It will never leave you.
It uses the setting and dance to show Western European history from the thirties through the eighties and it will take you from giddy joy to lost sobbing to impotent outrage. Best description I've ever heard of it: "When words are superfluous."
You don't even need to love dance to be undone by this film. It is just so bloody human.

Divorcing Jack (1998) - one of my two favourite films. I consider it a hilarious romance, but it is NOT for everyone. It is the blackest of humour. Set in Ulster after the Troubles, it manages be a send-up of an action/thriller but still be an excellent action/thriller. David Thewlis, Rachel Griffiths, Jason Isaacs & Robert Lindsey are all beyond brilliant and Bronagh Gallagher steals the film. There is a lot of violence, cursing & horrible people which ends up a sweetly charming surprise.
As I said, I highly recommend this film for a funny, date-night treat. But remember my idea of funny is "In Bruges"; my idea of romantic is "Harold and Maude"
