New UK trial underway to see if 800-cal diet can cure Type II

Those of you who read about the 2013 medically-supervised trial with only 11 patients, 8 of whom rid themselves of diabetes after 8 to 12 weeks on an 800-calorie diet, will be interested to read this article about a larger trial being conducted to properly evaluate the diet's effects.

1. Weight loss is definitely a help. I was taking Victoza and lost a lot of weight. My blood levels

were very good. Stopped taking it and now I am right back were I started. But 800 cal. sounds like a starvation diet.

2. 800 cals is a starvation diet, but you're only on it for 8 to 12 weeks. Not forever.

The scientists' working hypothesis is that the diet, being severe rather than slow, pulls bad fat from around the pancreas and inner organs first and very quickly. They think that too much of that inner fat is causing diabetes by interfering with hormone production.

In the first 11 patients, they noticed that that fat went from 6% down to 1 or 2% and those patients were free of diabetes. They were able to resume normal eating (ie, did not have to watch sugars or starches). This will probably not last if they gain back tons of weight by eating like idiots, but they can now eat normally without BG testing, restricting carbs, etc.

3. That sounds like it might be worth a try. My sister has been a dieter all her life and no matter

what she did it came back.

With the Victoza if you are losing weight it can get so that you have lost too much weight. That is why my doctor suggested I get off it - that and I was upset about the cost. I did not have to pay for it but someone did. Now because of my weight gain we are thinking of going back on it at a lower dosage.

4. Note that the diet is not for general weight loss, though that will occur.

It's specifically designed to pull that inner fat from around your pancreas so that your hormones start working again.
