Take a Tour of Good Food Across Appalachia

Tuesday afternoon at the Capitol Market in Charleston, Governor Earl Ray Tomblin and other Mountain State officials announced the national launch of a local food map-guide.

It's called Bon Appetit Appalachia. It highlights unique culinary destinations throughout the 13 Appalachian states, including 21 sites from our own state. Business owners from all across the region were in attendance. They were able to market their cooking by offering free samples to those passing by.

New data shows dining out is one of the main components a tourist is looking for during their travels. To add to that, officials with the Appalachian Regional Commission said there's an increasing demand for unusual local cuisine. This information will help show tourists what kind of unique cuisine they can find here...

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Governor Earl Ray Tomblin joined the Appalachian Regional Commission at Charleston’s Capitol Market Tuesday to announce a new culinary map that showcases many West Virginia food destinations. Bon Appetit Appalachia is a guide that features hundreds of culinary destinations from local farms to wineries across the thirteen states in the region.

Business owners from across the state attended the event, offering free samples and showing customers what they have to offer. Rob Losey’s distillery, the Bloomery Plantation Distillery, is located in Charles Town and he said he is happy to see his business on the guide.

“My products are all-natural, hand-crafted liqueurs from fruits, roots, and nuts that we grow in West Virginia. We grow the lemons, the raspberries, the walnuts, the pumpkins, ginger, on our facility. So, people come and taste our products and see what we do. Mapping Appalachia's Food and Farm to Table Destinations

Agri-tourism is not a new concept to Jennifer "Tootie" Jones. A fifth generation farmer, she raises grass fed beef on Swift Level Farm in Lewisburg. She was one of the farmers who attended yesterday’s event at the Capitol Market. She sells beef to 14 West Virginia restaurants and several retail stores, some of which are featured on a new online map, called Bon Appétit Appalachia, a project by the Appalachian Regional Commission. There’s also a print map, which lists 283 food destinations across the region, including:
1.Capitol Market, Charleston
2.The Wild Ramp, Huntington
3.South Side Depot, Parkersburg
4.The Custard Stand, Webster Springs
5.Swift Level, Lewisburg
6.Thistledew Farm Proctor
7.The East End Bazaar, Charleston

The map was distributed to tourism agencies and ran in a magazine called Food Traveler. The premier of this map was celebrated at an event yesterday at the Capitol Market in Charleston.

Jones’ Swift Level Farm is featured as a destination on the Bon Appétit map. "We love people of all ages coming to the farm, and we have activities for children. They can feed the chickens and collect eggs and feed the pigs and run free in the grass, and not worry about anything except having fun,” says Jones.... MORE
