If I recall he caught an elbow and broke his nose. Wore mask to protect and grew to be comfortable with it on. I could be wrong but I followed Detroit back in that era. That is how i remember it.

I followed the Pacers closely in that era and they faced up with those Pistons w/ Rip Hamilton. They were great defensively.
