Bernie Sanders
Related: About this forumI just got a call from a volunteer with the HRC campaign. I told her I supported Bernie,
said, sounding surprised, "You're a Bernie supporter?"
"Yes," I said, "and you should be, too, if you ever want a chance to take our country back from the banksters, the corporations, and the 1%. Besides, the polls show that Bernie would mop the floor with any of the Republican candidates, while Hillary shows just a 1-point lead over Trump--which is within the margin of error--and losing badly to all of the other possible candidates. Maybe you should give some thought to this information and switch sides."

Really guys, just stop it right now. Sorry about the Bernie situation. Really, sorry. So really sorry. No, really sorry...

Is there some trauma associated with that?

(24,010 posts)I'm getting real disgusted with my demographic (born in the year of The Bomb, campaigned for JFK in 1960, when I was 16). Hillary Clinton is a disaster for feminism and for everything else.
Just learned this week that she has Henry Frigging Kissinger for an advisor. And now, PNAC's Robert Kagan!!! Do we have to do THAT all over again? Christ! Yes--Hillary the neo-con! She might as well be Maggie Thatcher! Worse. She might as well be Bush in those guys' bloody hands. And how dare they use my lifetime feminist struggle, and your lifetime feminist struggle, and every woman's lifetime feminist struggle as a MASK FOR WAR!!! HOW DARE THEY!!!
See my comments on what Susan Sarandon said. There is FEAR in Hollywood of the bully "Alpha" girls. Fear! People "won't come out for Bernie" because they "fear being shamed"! I kid you not. WTF is going on!

(31,384 posts)A lot of us 60ish women (I'll be 65 in less than week) broke glass ceilings or were otherwise the token female in male dominated professions. Hillary is the old style "do it the way the guys did it" to
get power. I do believe that's one reason she's so hawkish...she wants to show her "balls" to the guys she wants to play with, much the same way Trump has to talk about
the size of his dick.
I proudly voted for Bernie yesterday in early voting in NC--and so did my 73 year old husband.

I suspect that I won't get any more calls from that campaign, though, since the volunteer probably made a note that I would try to persuade callers to switch sides.
ON EDIT: We were BOTH polite and friendly. I think that is important.

(9 posts)There was a time when opposing politicos only went after positions on issues. Nowadays, positions, issues and the concerns of the electorate are of little consequence. When I see the conduct of the Republican candidates, I wonder who stinks the worst, since they're all rubbing shit in their hair.

(1,196 posts)It is much easier to just blindly follow her than to try to defend her past and present. I have seen many of her supporters who claim to be feminists start sputtering when I press them to defend Hillary "We must destroy her story" Clinton's treatment of Bill's sex abuse victims. Much easier to walk away. A few here on DU have walked away when I have brought up the subject rather than try to defend her.

(65,336 posts)should be. We should not act as though the People's Front of Judea are our blood enemies, because we need to come together in November to defeat the real bad guys, no matter which candidate wins the Democratic nomination. With the likelihood of three vacancies on the SCOTUS, too much is at stake to risk a GOP president.

(65,336 posts)before I could even figure out that the woman was calling from Hillary's campaign. I had to keep asking her to speak up and to speak more slowly so I could understand what she was saying.
Even when wearing my hearing aids, I rely heavily on lipreading to understand--and I get a lot wrong anyway.

(4,221 posts)They also now have Facebanking for Bernie on Facebook - which works like any type of messaging.
Had my first Facebank contact me last night. He was wonderful (I am already involved in campaign, but was age of my grown kids, so I let him tell me all about how excited he was about Bernie and why.)
The contact mode is either a friend, or a friend of a friend who has "liked" one of the pages/groups identified with Bernie (so not total strangers, no more than one degree of separation).

(417 posts)I've politely expressed my disagreement with Bernie's treatment by the DNC. Then I explain my meager income and that the only person I could imagine supporting was Bernie Sanders. And would you please pass that along.
I wonder if the PTB hears that? I see no evidence of that.
It is so frustrating to not get to vote until June (California). Hope Bernie can hang in there.

(22,308 posts)After saying "Hello" she went into a short speech and asked if I would be voting for Bernie next Tuesday.
My one word response, "Absolutely".
She then said that was all she needed to hear and thanked me.
I thanked her for taking the time to volunteer and the conversation ended.
I am guessing it took about 20 seconds from start to finish.

(20,453 posts)As a Bernie phone banker, I can tell you that persons answering me who supported Hillary didn't use the same strategy in their response. One woman said in a rather terse way that she couldn't understand why every woman wasn't supporting Hillary. Since I know that I should not respond TO that, I just let her talk and then thanked her for her time. When that type of call is finished, I simply mark in who they support or are leaning towards, if not Bernie. I move on after.
This response of yours was a thoughtful one. Good on you!

(2,717 posts)told her I was voting for Bernie because he was on my side and she wasn't. This person immediately responded with "But wouldn't you agree that hardworking Americans..." and I don't know what else she was going to say because I interrupted and told her that I wasn't a hardworking American because I don't work, that lots of people are retired and or just can't work, and to please not call me again. I should have added that I don't respond to dog whistles.
Yeah, like Hillary gives two fucks about "hardworking Americans" - unless they work on Wall Street.

(4,291 posts)I'm getting LOTS of calls from unfamiliar numbers and I ALWAY let those roll over to voicemail. The callers never leave messages, so I figure I'm avoiding personally telling someone to go to hell.
And you have a lot more tact than I do. My instinct would be to challenge them to persuade their ideal candidate to release scripts or transcripts of her Goldman Sachs speeches, explain how Bill and his bullhorn did not violate electioneering laws in Massachusetts, and justify DWS and DNC's anti-Bernie shenanigans. This call would not end well for either party.
Stay strong, my friend!

(2,672 posts)Really? You told them that? Might as well have conversation with a tomato. If you present facts to a Hillary supporter, they'll not only turn red with anger, they'll deny the facts. With a tomato, they won't get angry with you and they're already red, so save yourself the trouble with HRC supporters.
Yes, I know, tomatoes are only red when they're ripe. Hillary supporters are ripe with daily fresh BS and newly found anger at the truth.

(65,336 posts)don't stop to realize there are better alternatives. I seriously doubt I changed her mind, but maybe hearing someone speak calmly and intelligently in Bernie's favor caused her to stop and think for a moment.
I have verifiably caused low-info voters, usually young ones, to switch from GOP to Dem. Often people vote out of misguided brand loyalty, and that can be true in a primary as well as in a general election.
