...and characterized them as a vote for something horrible they stuck in (which he clearly opposed), or a vote against something great (which he clearly supported).

He didn't defend himself on at least one other occasion that she pulled this. (I can't recall the topic offhand). I'm not sure why. Perhaps because the accusations are "technically" correct? He was in fact effectively blackmailed into voting for/against omnibus bills that contained something horrible/great.

It seems simple enough to correct the record in these cases (citing other votes and describing the means by which he was strong-armed into supporting/opposing such bills --i.e., like not wanting to shut down the government because he opposed some poison pill).

I think he is setting the record straight more effectively (albeit after the fact) this time.
