I think Bernie's attempt to clarify the "ghetto" comment may have made things worse.

Excerpt from NBC:

"What I meant to say is when you talk about ghettos traditionally, what you're talking about is African-American communities,"

Um...

"I think many white people are not aware of the kinds of pressures and the kind of police oppression that sometimes takes place within the African-American community," Sanders added.

OK, sort of makes sense, but I think it would have been safer to say he misspoke and move on.

misspeak. You can not be white and be in a ghettos in this country. You just can't. Until Webster changes their entry a word means a word. Even if we as a culture change the word someone in a debate must use that word that is in the dictionary because that is source we all are suppose to use.

but there are other minority communities. So if he had said "When you talk about ghettos, you are generally speaking about minority communities." that would have made the statement true.

the way I see it is Sanders is old school debater, you can see it with his finger wagging which is universal sign for you would like the moderator give you a rebuttal and not go onto the next quest. It is suppose to be like this with a timer for each time to talk and a agreed on number of times you can make rebuttal and counter.

in purposefully picking up the wrong parts of what Sanders says in order to make some kind of gotcha issue out of them for consumption by the corporate media and the other voices we hear from when this happens. The man's fought for equality his whole adult life and been arrested for civil disobedience, that's good enough.

I can live with a man and work with a predominately male crew and have mostly male friends, but I will never know exactly what it is like to be a man in this society.

My children can't know what it is like to look Hispanic even though they are. They do however live mostly with Hispanic people who look Hispanic. My SO is Hispanic and I still don't know what it's like to be followed and looked at like a suspect. I do however get riled that he is looked at that way.

Like wise my SO even though he lives with me and he has lived with three girls who grew up to be women, he can't know what it's like to be a woman in this society.

I can't know what it's like to be perceived as a POC no matter how many are in my family and among my neighbors, associates, and friends. I do know what it's like to live in an inner city and be poor, but that is from the perspective of someone who was from a small town and looks white.

If you have money and have always had enough to meet your basic needs plus do a whole lot of things you want to do you can't know what it's like to not have that. If you are poor you can't know what it's like to navigate the world of people with expectations you will go to a certain school, you will drive a certain kind of car, you will hang out with the right people, you will have the right kind of job and so forth and if you hit hard financial times you will keep up appearances even if it doesn't make sense with your reduced income.

The only people I see being offended by that comment are white people who haven't been out of their zone of being in a white majority.

Bernie's not perfect. While he's damn-near perfect
The worst case scenario, he comes out and apologizes. But then, that would be Hillary's turn to apologize for super predator comment. And that would be a moment of clarity -which is worse, Bernie uttering "ghetto" in passing while explaining how bad it is for poor African-Americans? or Hillary saying we need to "bring them to heel" because they are "super predators"?

being up in arms about this kind of stuff. I live very close to the urban center of the Twin Cities. I lived smack dab in the middle of it for many many years and no I don't know what it's like to be black and live there. But, I am mixed and my SO is also mixed, but he looks like a typical Mexican dude, so I know he's been hassled he has told me stories that make me want to punch a cop. Still that doesn't mean I am going to know what it's like. But, I do know that where I am from we talk about race issues and we don't get offended if someone says The hood or the ghetto or gang bangers or whatever and that there are problems in urban areas where people are poor, heck most of us have been there done that.

are not working class, or middle-class. White and black and Latinos all alike.
So yeah, there's a class division in racial discourse. And those people on TV are leading it (supposedly).
