The Brooklyn-raised, motorcycle-loving wife of presidential candidate Bernie Sanders will make a campaign swing in Alaska this week, just in time for Saturdays Democratic caucuses.
Jane Sanders will arrive in Alaska Thursday and meet with reporters in Anchorage that afternoon. She will spend much of Friday in Dillingham, one of the spots that anchored President Obamas Alaska trip last year. On Saturday in Anchorage, she'll have coffee at the Bear Tooth Theatrepub at 8 a.m., an event open to the public. Then there'll be a march before the caucuses, which start at 10 a.m.
In Dillingham, the whole community is invited to a lunch and town hall Friday from noon to 2 p.m. at the Dillingham Middle School gym, according to Alannah Hurley, executive director of United Tribes of Bristol Bay. Sanders is scheduled to talk about the campaign and answer questions. Then, from 3 to 4:30 p.m., a second event will be held for Alaska Native women at the Dillingham womens shelter, known as SAFE, for Safe and Fear-Free Environment. That event is framed around a variety of issues including child care, health care and education. But it also will be a listening session for problems rampant in rural Alaska such as domestic violence and sexual assault, and wont be open to the press, according to Jill Yordy, who is managing the Sanders campaign in Alaska.
Sanders will also meet with Bristol Bay tribes, who plan to talk about protecting salmon-rich Bristol Bay from threats including the proposed Pebble mine, Hurley said. The tribes hope the Sanders campaign will take a stand on Pebble as a result of the visit, she said.
Its very exciting that one of the candidates is paying attention to Alaska Native issues, paying attention to tribal issues, Hurley said. It means a lot to us in Bristol Bay.

We'll probably just go straight to the caucus and skip the coffee and march since the parking is going to be limited and there will probably be a big turnout, but hopefully she'll speak at the caucus if that's allowed (I'm not sure).

We so seldom see any presidential candidates campaigning up here - I think Ron Paul has been one of the few in my memory - but having Jane will be almost as good.
Bernie has been running some great TV ads up here over the past week or two, but I haven't seen any for Hillary. I really think he's going to run away with it. We have one of those types of caucuses that certain people here at DU hate, the kind where independents can register as Dem on the day of the caucus and then switch back to independent later, if they're so inclined.

(46,436 posts)It actually was more of a town hall rather than a rally, but Jane was aMAZing, took lots of questions and was just so down-to-earth and friendly. I feel positively inspired. The ballroom at the hotel was packed, standing room only and everybody was so enthusiastic. It was great...I'm really glad I went.
I'll post some pictures tomorrow.
Did I mention how unusual it is for presidential candidates or their wives to campaign here? Ron Paul is the only one I can remember. Jane said if Bernie gets the nomination, they will definitely come back here to campaign for our three tiny electoral votes. It's nice to feel like somebody cares, like when the president came up here last summer.
Ed. Oh, yeah, I DID mention that, and I mentioned it again, so you see how much it means to me. LOL.

(24,010 posts)Thanks for posting this. It makes me sad to think we may be deprived of these wonderful two people as our national leaders, because of the vast corruption of our political party, the vast influence of Big Money and the vast influence of the Corrupt Media, and all of the dirty tricks of all three.
Given an even chance, Americans would vote for Bernie Sanders overwhelmingly. That is clear from many national polls over many months, and because of his inherent qualities of honesty and integrity that are instantly apparent to all who get to know him, even in short blips in the 'news.' (His trustworthy ratings are sky high.)
But we don't have a fair contest. Maybe I should say mad instead of sad. It makes me mad that we may well have the Goldman Sachs candidate thrust upon us, because our system is so corrupt. But who is responsible for not doing anything about the corruption until now? We all bear responsibility for it, especially us oldsters.
Well, get over sad and mad, and get to work! We have a real, honest to God, Democratic president to elect, with an awesome First Lady who turned early poverty into compassion--in a campaign that has never been easy, and never will be easy.

They have started something. Those that feel the Bern have been changed politically. And that is not going away.
