"In It Together"- Inspired by the words of Bernie Sanders

Published on Mar 21, 2016
This video is a collaboration inspired by Bernie Sanders, from his response to a question in a CNN interview about his religion.

The verses are Myria’s own words, on 3 of the social issues that Bernie speaks on. Paid family leave, privatized prisons, and the environment. It was difficult to choose just 3, but these are the social issues that currently resonate with her very deeply.

The chorus is composed entirely of Bernie’s words, specifically from his response about his religion and spirituality. These words resonated deeply with both of us, and were the inspirational roots for this creative project.

We hope that regardless of your political affiliation or preference, this song and slideshow will speak to you and will help us all to manifest a world in which our every action indicates that we embrace the very simple truth, that we're in it together.

Bernie quote: (Chorus)

“When you hurt, when your children hurt, I hurt. I hurt. And when my kids hurt, you hurt. And it’s very easy to turn our backs on kids who are hungry, or veterans who are sleeping out on the street...I believe that when we do the right thing...treat people with respect and dignity, when we say that that child who is hungry is my child … I think we are more human...we're in it together"

Full Lyrics to "In It Together"

Verse 1:
A mama and her baby rocking in a chair
Soft glow of the moon dancing in the curls
Of her long dark hair
Baby nursing back to sleep
Mama will rest peacefully
Knowing she doesn’t have
To race back to work
She can spend these precious days
With the human that she made
Seems insanity to me
For it to be any other way

Chorus:

When you hurt, and when your children hurt, I hurt.
And when I hurt, and when my kids hurt, you hurt
It’s easy to turn
Our backs on kids who are hungry
Or the veterans sleeping out on the street
But I believe when we do the right thing
Treat people with respect and dignity
When we say that child who is hungry
Is my child
We become more human
We’re in it together.

Verse 2:
You know that prison down the road
Filled to the brim mostly with black folks
Doing their time
Getting paid pennies and dimes doing work
For the man in the suit
Who owns the prison that is privatized
He will a label on that will say
Made in the USA
It may not be cotton fields
But the injustice is very real
And none of us can be free
Until we even the keel

Chorus: Repeat

Verse 3:
Sinking our hands into the soil
Planting seeds that we can reap
Giving thanks for all the gifts
That all humans need
Water that is clean
Air that we can breathe
These are the most important things
For us to leave
Money and greed
Profit for those who aren’t truly in need
These are not reasons
To destroy the hand that feeds us
Work together today
To make tomorrow a place
For our grandchildren to thrive
To live out healthy
And blissful lives

Chorus: Repeat

I love this: "They tried to bury us. They didn't know we were seeds."
