Dem poster from another board just reported that his girlfriend, who has long-term Dem registration and been a regular voter, was missing from registration when she tried to vote early. There was simply no record of her!
She was able to re-register and vote, but the lines were long!

(36,063 posts)WI has open primaries and so most people don't register with any affiliation. Certainly some do. But, well, this is an internet story told about a poster who has a friend, etc.
In previous years there have been efforts to cage voters using returned mailings. It's a technique mostly used by republicans for general elections and aimed at young people who change addresses.
I've not seen a credibly sourced story about such in WI, yet.

(32,004 posts)check on that as well. I think a Wisconsin license is enough but better double-check. Walker changed the requirements. Students especially should look into this!

(53,475 posts)The "lines are very long" reports may just be intended to discourage voters so one shouldn't really propagate them.
Voter IDs are free and provided by the Wisconsin Dept. of Transportation
Complete information on how to obtain the voter ID is available here:
http://wisconsindot.gov/Pages/dmv/license-drvs/how-to-apply/id-card.aspx
ID Card for voting phone (608) 266-1069
Fax (608) 267-3812
NOTE: An active (unexpired) driver's license is an acceptable photo ID for voting. If you have one, you are *not* eligible to obtain the free ID (because you don't need it)
Where to get voter ID
You must apply for Voter IDs and, if necessary, a Documentation Verification Petition, at your DMV Customer Service Center http://wisconsindot.gov/Pages/online-srvcs/find-dmv/default.aspx
Requirements
* You must be a US Citizen and at least 18 by next election
* You must provide:
>Proof of name and date of birth, for example, a certified U.S. birth certificate, valid passport or certificate of naturalization. NOTE: If you need to pay fees to obtain proof, you will need to use the Documentation Verification Petition Process and complete a Document Verification Process (DMV Administrator Petition) form MV3012 http://wisconsindot.gov/Pages/dmv/license-drvs/how-to-apply/petition-process.aspx
>Proof of identity (usually a document with a signature or photo) and proof of Wisconsin residency.
>Proof of U.S. citizenship, legal permanent resident status, legal conditional resident status or legal temporary visitor status. (See Document Verification Petition Process if fees arise in order to obtain free ID card for voting).
>Your social security number.

(3,577 posts)There is no specific "voter ID," just a short list of accepted IDs that people could already have: WI driver's license or state (nondriving) ID or receipt given after applying for one, US passport, military ID, tribal ID, certificate of naturalization, college student ID if it meets certain requirements, and (recently added) a VA ID card. The stipulations attached to each of these are set out here. One important one is that a driver's license or state ID can be expired back to Nov. 4, 2014 and still be accepted. Also, the license address does not have to be current. A voter who has to register should bring a utility bill, bank statement or government document or letter to prove address.
