Sanders rise in the past year has been truly exceptional. He went from an 80 point deficit last fall to being nearly tied with Clinton today in national polls. Sanders was a virtual unknown when he began his campaign last summer, while Clinton is likely one of the most famous politicians in the world today. Sanders, while caucusing with the Democrats, and voting with the Democrats almost without fail for the past 30 years, is a newcomer to the Democratic party, switching his party affiliation from Independent to Democrat in order to run for the Democratic nomination, while Clinton is a true party insider. And Sanders has been able to build his miraculous movement against all odds, with the Democratic party openly hostile to him, and the major media outlets practically ignoring his entire campaign. And perhaps most impressively, Sanders has managed to fund his campaign entirely with small, private donations from individual citizens, refusing to take any money from large corporate donors or Super PACs. He has received a record-breaking 6 million individual contributions, averaging just $27.00 each. And even though Clinton is largely financed by wealthy donors and corporate funded Super PACs, Sanders has managed to out-fundraise her for many months.

(13,326 posts)2. THIS:
Bernies message is really quite simple lets get money out of politics, so that the rich and powerful arent the only ones with a voice in our government; lets provide a basic level of support to ALL Americans, including healthcare and education, which should both be considered universal human rights; lets require the wealthiest Americans and huge corporations to pay their fair share of taxes; and lets re-invigorate the middle class, and make our economy work for everyone, not just the top 1%.
I would just add that on the foreign policy side, the message is to
minimize the influence of corporate interests on our foreign policy, to seek peaceful resolution of conflicts, and use war as the very last resort and only if the security of the United States is threatened.
