They see everything through that lens and were terribly afraid his trip to the Vatican would elevate his standing and thus harm their goddess' chances. They see him solely as a competitor to the person they worship and/or serve. So when his trip didn't get much notice, they assumed he had failed and then they lapsed into rightwing juvenile sneering/ridiculing mode, which is where they are now (and most of the time). They're not concerned about money and they know perfectly well that taxpayers' money didn't finance his trip; their primary aim is to make him look bad.

They invariably come from a low and stupid place.
