DNC treatment of Sanders at issue in emails leaked to Wikileaks

DNC treatment of Sanders at issue in emails leaked to Wikileaks

Source: CNN

(CNN)Nearly 20,000 emails sent and received by Democratic National Committee staff members were released Friday by Wikileaks, and some messages are raising questions about the committee's impartiality during the Democratic primary.

One email appears to show DNC staffers asking how they can reference Sanders' faith to weaken him in the eyes of Southern voters. Another seems to depict an attorney advising the committee on how to defend Clinton against an accusation by the Sanders campaign of not living up to a joint fundraising agreement.

The revelation threatened to shatter the uneasy peace between the Clinton and Sanders camps and supporters days before the Democratic convention kicks off next week.

The emails were leaked from the accounts of seven DNC officials, Wikileaks said. CNN has not independently established the emails' authenticity.

WikiLeaks Emails Show DNC Favored Hillary Clinton Over Bernie Sanders During The Democratic Primary

One email from DNC Deputy Communications Director Eric Walker to several DNC staffers cites two news articles showing Sanders leading in Rhode Island and the limited number of polling locations in the state: “If she outperforms this polling, the Bernie camp will go nuts and allege misconduct. They’ll probably complain regardless, actually.”

…Instead of treating Sanders with impartiality, the DNC exhibits resentful disdain toward him and the thousands of disenfranchised voters he could have brought into the party.

“Wondering if there’s a good Bernie narrative for a story, which is that Bernie never ever had his act together, that his campaign was a mess,” wrote DNC Deputy Communications Director Mark Paustenbach to DNC Communications Director Luis Miranda, in response to backlash over DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz shutting off the Sanders campaign’s access to voter database files.

Another chain reveals MSNBC’s Chuck Todd and DNC staff members discussing how to discredit MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski’s call for Wasserman Schultz to resign.

Political observers and media focused largely on a series of incriminating emails that revealed in various instances, DNC officials spoke disparagingly about both Sanders and his supporters.

Several other emails suggested the national organization, run by embattled Florida Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, was trying to tilt the scales in favor of the former Secretary of State. Several communications showed DNC staffers collaborating with political journalists at key broadcast and print outlets to influence their coverage of both candidates.

In one message dated May 5, an exchange involving the DNC's finance chief asked a staffer to gather information on Sanders' religious beliefs, suggesting that it could influence the decision of southern voters. Sanders has alluded to his Jewish ancestry, but hasn't made much reference to religious beliefs during the campaign.

For his part, the Vermont senator remained largely silent about the affair. He made no remarks about the controversy on Twitter, where early Saturday he made an innocuous statement about the minimum wage.

3. It's OK for the DNC to violate its own rules, as long as it's to help Hillary. Read it right here.
