Bernie Sanders Was the Only Appropriately Dressed Man at the Inauguration (Update)

Bernie Sanders isn't exactly a flashy man in terms of style. Even if a major designer fashion label like Balenciaga just gave the nod to the former presidential candidate, the guy has said time and time again he loathes shopping more than almost anything. It turns out, his lack for any sort of panache in his wardrobe came in handy at today's inauguration, where it rained just as President Trump began speaking. (The symbolism of that moment was not lost on many.) And yet Bernie was seemingly the only one on stage who was seemingly dressed appropriately for the weather. (Former President struggled mightily with a poncho in the most George W. Bush way ever).

Everyone from Kellyanne Conway to Barack Obama to, yes, even Donald J. Trump himself, were wearing wool or cashmere topcoats, which are basically the mortal enemy of rain. Sure, Conway was wearing Gucci and Obama seemed unfazed by the rain (and why would he considering he was literally handing the keys of our democracy over to a man who claimed for years Obama wasn't a citizen). But Bernie Sanders was simply in his trustee green park. This coat isn't new—in fact, he's worn time and time again throughout the past year, but point is it looked to be made of a waterproof fabric. Sometimes, pragmatism prevails even in moments that call for stand-out fashion swerves.

Now, truth is, the claim that it's made by Costco's in-house Kirkland Signature line is unconfirmed, but it would be on somewhat on brand (at least from a consumer price POV—Costo is also a multi-billion dollar publicly traded company so maybe not so much). We'd like to imagine the coat is made by Patagonia (unofficially the world's most woke major apparel brand) and that Sanders simply took the logo off to avoid looking overly branded.

Update: Bernie Sanders' coat is made by Burton, a company based out of Burlington, Vermont (Bernie's home state). You can buy it for yourself here: https://www.burton.com/us/en/burton-ak-2l-lz-down-jacket/W17-100061.html?dwvar_W17-100061_variationColor=10006103408
