January 3, 1995. Thanks to record low turnout, the Republican Party won a majority in the House of Representatives for the first time since 1952 in the November 1994 elections. Led by Newt Gingrich, the GOP put forward the "Contract with America" and Bernie Sanders spearheaded the opposition by helping to form the House Progressive Caucus, which today is the largest caucus in the House.
