June 27 - Ali Dieng - City Council Election in Burlington, VT this Tuesday!
Ali grew up in Senegal and studied law at the University of Mauritania. He met and married his wife, Angela Smith-Dieng, in his native country, before deciding to move to Burlington, Vermont together in 2008. They currently live in Ward 7 with their two two daughters, Aisha, 3, and Apsa, 9.
Ali is the Family Outreach Coordinator for the Burlington School District Extended Learning Opportunities. He serves on the School District Equity Council and is the manager and performer at Africa Jamono Drumming & Band Association. Ali also developed and runs Parent University, a program he started to help New American parents get more involved in their childrens education.
As a person of color and an immigrant from an underdeveloped country in Africa, he has lived experiences about the critical importance of ensuring that people can meet their basic needs and have the resources available to provide for their financial security. He was inspired to run for office for the first time by Bernies presidential campaign and his experience working with Rights and Democracy (RAD).
Ali is motivated to deepen Burlingtons relationship with members of the community and wants to make a greater effort to connect residents to all the great things happening in the city. As a councilor he will work to increase affordable housing, expand quality affordable childcare, create more opportunities for youth, fight the opioid epidemic, expand public transportation, and confront racial bias in policing and government structure.
