United Auto Workers nearing win for unionizing Mississippi Nissan plant after 14-year struggle

July 10, 2017, 10:44 PM

Excerpts:

A bruising, decade-long organizing battle at a Mississippi Nissan plant may soon yield the result United Auto Workers wished for — a vote to join the union. The UAW filed petitions Monday to force a vote at the Nissan plant and will hold an event Tuesday to talk about the campaign. UAW has been fighting to organize the 6,500 workers at the Canton, Miss. factory for nearly 14 years. Sandra Hightower of the National Labor Relations Board confirmed to the Associated Press that the board received the UAW’s election petition in its New Orleans office.

UAW’s pro-union campaign sought to link support for the union with civil rights for African-Americans. Actor Danny Glover, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders have offered support for the drive.

The UAW wants to represent all production and maintenance workers at the Canton plant. An election vote will be scheduled “as soon as possible,” according to the NLRB.
