The UAW filed petitions Monday to force a vote at the Nissan plant and will hold an event Tuesday to talk about the campaign. UAW has been fighting to organize the 6,500 workers at the Canton, Miss. factory for nearly 14 years. Sandra Hightower of the National Labor Relations Board confirmed to the Associated Press that the board received the UAWs election petition in its New Orleans office.
UAWs pro-union campaign sought to link support for the union with civil rights for African-Americans. Actor Danny Glover, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders have offered support for the drive.
The UAW wants to represent all production and maintenance workers at the Canton plant. An election vote will be scheduled as soon as possible, according to the NLRB.
