Or maybe those were the college young dems chauffered in and given pre-screened questions in advance. And those "Conversations" With Hillary fund-raisers? If they were like the one held near my house, HRC gives the same feel good talk, and then poses for 10 seconds each for one picture with anyone who coughed up $2,700. ... you're clairvoyant.

So after reading your comment above, it occurred to me to do a Google Search on that image in the pro-Hillary graphic, the one where she's holding a cup of coffee and listening to real voters. You nailed it. It was a pre-arranged meeting back in April of this year at a LeClaire, Iowa coffee shop. In attendance were Austin Bird, a former Clinton campaign intern, Carter Bell, president of the University of Iowa College Democrats, and Sara Sedlacek, of Planned Parenthood of the Heartland.

There's certainly nothing wrong in having a pre-arranged meeting with people involved with and interested in your campaign. But it certainly wasn't any kind of spontaneous sit-down with "everyday Americans," to use Clinton's phrase (since discarded when it fell flat with focus groups). It's more of the staged, insulated, same-old same-old.

Looks like those 3 were bussed in, immediately posed at the table for the picture and then were sent on their way. No water glasses, no coffee - nada.

For all those millions, HRC is so cheap with her staff - makes them pay for their own cell phones and transportation. She's in her private jet, they're on the local Greyhound bus.

I can imagine all 3 of those young people, dressed up and desperately thinking maybe they can parlay this meeting into a paying job. But hey, at least they got a FREE picture w/ Hillary - that's a savings of $2,700 each!

Look at the other "normal" people/regular customers in the background - all in jeans, sweatshirts and tshirts. Hillary has her back to them, of course, just like in real life.

The bannings aren't dated, too bad, because I ought to change my sig line to something like that.

Perhaps more to the point, the Hillary group has banned 109 so far, the Bernie group only 103. The Hillary group bans anyone who doesn't just wave the pom-poms and jump up and down enthusiastically, and then complain bitterly about anything negative said about her elsewhere.

Old Crow

38. I was initially pretty upset about being banned.
Fri Oct 2, 2015, 08:40 AM
Oct 2015

Then I started finding out that... well... practically everyone on here is banned from that group. And after reading some of the material over on HillaryClintonSupporters.com, I began to see the ban as something of a badge of honor.

All that said, I do have some sympathy for the Hillary supporters. They are outnumbered on DU by a wide margin, something like 8-to-1, and they have a lot of people intruding on their safe haven. It stands to reason that they'd have more bans from their group than the Bernie Sanders Group does. In fact, I'm surprised the difference in numbers isn't greater.

Lastly, by way of atonement, I'll even state that my post back in June in the Hillary Group was inappropriate and I regret it. So I'm sorry, you guys, if you are reading this. (In my defense, like so many others, I was responding to an item on the main page and wasn't aware I was in the Hillary Group. I was zapped without a warning. Had I been warned, I would've deleted the offending post.)

and sent a PM to the group moderator who banned me, but to no avail. I think the worst part about how quickly they ban anyone with the slightest of negative comments, is that they are more and more in an echo chamber, and are going to be genuinely shocked when she loses Iowa and New Hampshire.

My bigger concern is that they will make the PUMAs of 2008 look like moderates.

Oh, and I likewise move through the Main Page of DU, not group by group. It seems as though most people here only visit their favorite groups.

40. Interesting thoughts regarding the echo chamber.
Fri Oct 2, 2015, 09:03 AM
Oct 2015

That's a huge concern of mine. I get very uncomfortable when I feel I'm surrounded by a cult of personality. I see that fairly often with Hillary supporters. I see it to a lesser degree with Bernie supporters. In all fairness, perhaps I'm a bit blind to Bernie-worship since it's my own camp; I hope not.

One of the watershed moments for me on DU regarding Bernie Sanders occurred a few months back when I posted some concerns or reservations I had about the Sanders campaign here in the Bernie Group. There was a little resistance to discussing sore spots, but in swoops Sabrina, bless her, and she politely addressed all the topics I'd raised non-judgmentally.

One of the best things about the Bernie supporters I know is that they seem issue-focused and not personality-focused. It's a little thing, but I like it that Sabrina uses the figure skates as her avatar, as opposed to the more obvious choice of a Bernie logo. It suggests to me that she's aware of the dangers of over-identifying with a candidate and losing her objectivity.

I share your concern about how the party will heal its wounds once a Democratic candidate is selected. I'll vote for Hillary if she gets it; she has some strengths that I'll try to focus on to take the sting out of it. Naturally, I hope the Hillary fans will be able to do likewise, should Bernie prevail.

Fri Oct 2, 2015, 09:44 AM
Oct 2015

For many of us, our political opinions are very closely connected to our identity.

For many gun owners, probably most of them, the guns are only one small part of who they are, and usually not at all the most important thing. So they have a perspective, even when dealing with someone who is an anti-gun nutcase, that many of us don't when it comes to our politics.

Although a lot of gun owners seem to regard gun ownership as an intrinsic part of their political views. Thinking about it now, though, those that feel that way are probably far-right conservatives and not hanging out on DU. So, for the gun owners on DU, I think your observation probably holds.

Yes. Odd is the word. I think it seems odd because it's trying, rather desperately, to portray the large crowds that have attended Bernie's appearances as a bad thing. What's this? Large crowds attending your speeches is a bad thing? Why didn't I get the memo?!

And, yeah, I totally get the message of the pro-Hillary graphic: Hillary listens. Well, that's great. Maybe if she listens really hard, she'll figure out what the issues are that people care about so she can get large crowds to attend her events. Of course, then you've got the whole Weathervane Problem, with people wondering if she's saying things because she believes them or is saying them because she thinks it's what they want to hear.

The fact that Bernie has been spending less money but drawing much larger crowds tells me he's already in step with what people care about. In fact, you could make the case he's been there for 20 years and has just been waiting for the people to catch up.
