BERNIE SANDERS HAS PROVIDED STATE BY STATE VOTER REGISTRATION INFO!!! deadlines, closed or open, etc

Last edited Mon Oct 5, 2015, 04:10 PM - Edit history (3)

Bernie has it all listed for us: http://voteforbernie.org/

Bernie supporters are particularly excited about how his message is resonating with young people, but also some republicans. As exciting as this information is, it means ABSOLUTELY NOTHING if we don't get them registered properly for the primary election and SOON!!!

In New York state, for example, there are ONLY 3 DAYS LEFT TO CHANGE YOUR REGISTRATION!! New York has CLOSED PRIMARIES which means that each registered voter must claim party affiliation and cannot vote for a candidate in a different party unless they change their affiliation.

Also, teenagers who are 17, but will be 18 at the time of the primary, can still register to vote. They must provide photo ID which proves they will be 18 on April 19, 2016, usually a driver's license. Registration can be done at any DMV. Other locations may be also be available in your state - call your local DMV for further info.

Bernie has a list of all the states with their registration deadlines and whether or not they vote by caucus, open primary or closed primary. Only open primary states can cross party lines when they vote. Again, the list can be seen here: http://voteforbernie.org/

Please help spread the word on this. And please kick and recommend this post for wider visibility.

Time to GET OUT THE VOTE!!!!!!

IMPORTANT UPDATE: The October 9th deadline is only to change party affiliation. Registration ends 25 days before the election. h/t to mak3cats for the correction.

1. Also, make sure you're actually registered.

When I moved to NY, the DMV 'forgot' to send my voter registration information along. I had moved to one of the neon-red parts of upstate NY, so I strongly suspect the clerk didn't like the party I selected on the form.

I have a pinned thread but it is rather long and convoluted now.

My thought is to unpin it and let it sink naturally.

I can pin this one or make a new one with just this information in it.

Other hosts and members please weigh in on your thoughts about this.

Thanks.

4. Couple of clarifications to your post (and an excellent one it is, I might add)...

In regards to the New York example:

1. The October 9th deadline is only for those persons that are already registered voters, but not registered as Democrats. If someone isn't registered at all yet, the deadline for that will be sometime next March (state law is 25 days prior to the election in question).

2. A teen-ager can register before they turn 18, but only if they turn 18 before the end of that calendar year. One of my nieces will turn 18 on January 1, 2016, so she can't register until next year.

5. I investigated this further. Here's what I learned:

You are correct about the October 9th deadline. Thank you for that correction!!!

About teen-ager registration: Although the BoE website states, "18 years old by December 31 of the year in which you file this form" , it then says in parentheses, &quot note: you must be 18 years old by the date of the general, primary or other election in which you want to vote)". So, I called the Voter Registrar for further clarification. The Registrar told me told me that teenagers can still "early register" even if they are still 17 at the end of this calendar year. They must, however, be 18 by the time of the primary. Very confusing how they worded it on the website though. I will try registering my 17 year old today.

Thank you so much for your input, mak3cats!! I'll change the OP accordingly.

7. I'm looking at a voter registration form (I happen to keep one in my desk)...

It states:

To register you must:
* be a US citizen;
* be 18 years old by the end of this year;
* not be in prison or on parole for a felony conviction;
* not claim the right to vote elsewhere.

Some of the BoE people don't get things right sometimes - please make sure the registration will be accepted. It would be awful to think your child was registered and find out differently on Primary Day!

(And New York's BoE website is THE WORST when it comes to clarity!)

8. I agree that they get things wrong, so I called two different counties for confirmation.

They both said the 17 year old had to be 18 within a year of submitting the registration, and the dec 31 date was obsolete. I agree that we should confirm his registration after he turns 18 in feb.
