Bernie is making inroads with the African American community

Xposted from GD-P: This was last night, just before the debate............

I watched the debate, with some of my KC for Bernie Sanders peeps at a cafe and bar in downtown KC. The people who showed up - despite single-digit temperatures and icy roads - were a beautiful mix of young and old, black and white.

Edited to add: There were three watch parties in KC that I know of; I was at the one in the Sankofa Cafe and Bar near downtown Kansas City, MO. The Sankofa cafe serves Jamaican cuisine. The walls were adorned with pictures of Bob Marley and other reggae stars. Sankofa is a powerful word and symbol in the African-America community:

Sankofa is a word in the Twi language of Ghana that translates as "Go back and get it" (san - to return; ko - to go; fa - to fetch, to seek and take) and also refers to the Asante Adinkra symbol represented either by a bird with its head turned backwards taking an egg off its back, or as a stylised heart shape. Sankofa is often associated with the proverb, “Se wo were fi na wosankofa a yenkyi," which translates as: "It is not wrong to go back for that which you have forgotten."

The Sankofa symbol appears frequently in traditional Akan art, and has also been adopted as an important symbol in an African-American and African Diaspora context to represent the need to reflect on the past to build a successful future. It is one of the most widely dispersed adinkra symbols, appearing in modern jewellery, tattoos, and clothing.

The organizers of the event discussed canvassing, voter registration and get-out-the-vote activities for KC's inner city, so Bernie's supporters will be active there as well as the rest of Missouri.

But what an impressive act of acknowledgment and support. Next the Black college tour.
