Bernie Sanders pledges to a crowd of 7,000 in Alabama to carry on King’s legacy

Bernie Sanders, whose ability to connect with black voters remains a barrier to his White House bid, pledged Monday during a large-scale rally in Birmingham, Ala., that his agenda would build upon the vision of civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr.
Speaking on the national holiday commemorating Kings legacy, the Vermont senator told an overflow crowd estimated at more than 7,000 people that Kings work, in addition to civil rights, focused on helping poor people, regardless of race.
Sanders reminded the audience that King was assassinated in 1968 in Memphis, where he had traveled to show solidarity with striking city sanitation workers.
The fight for economic justice is exactly what this campaign is about, Sanders said, vowing to fight to carry on Kings radical and bold vision for America.
