Power restored to LUMA customers following explosion and fire at substation (Puerto Rico)

LUMA Energy President and CEO Wayne Stensby announced that as of 8 p.m. on Friday the company had restored service to customers directly affected by the explosion and fire that occurred on Thursday afternoon at the Monacillos, Río Piedras substation, although some residents reported that they were still without electricity well into Saturday, according to press reports.

Additional press reports said full service had been restored to affected power customers by 8 p.m. Saturday.

“We were able to safely stabilize the system and make temporary repairs to restore service as soon as possible. My thanks to all LUMA employees and authorities for their hard work in handling the incident safely and restoring service to our customers in difficult circumstances,” Stensby said Friday in a written statement.

Brigades of the private consortium, which took over as operator of the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority’s transmission and distribution system on June 1, continued to work at the Monacillos substation to repair the damaged infrastructure.
