Plaskett calls on Mapp to coordinate, communicate during VI disaster recovery

Mismanagement, a lack of federal and local coordination, abysmal communication, and a potentially disastrous underestimate of the millions of dollars it will take to rebuild the territory are some of the concerns raised by V.I. Delegate to Congress Stacey Plaskett in a letter to Gov. Kenneth Mapp on Friday.

Plaskett excoriated the Mapp administration’s response to hurricanes Irma and Maria, and echoed complaints of many in the territory who have said disaster relief has been slow and disorganized.

While she has rallied behind Mapp’s leadership so far, Plaskett cautioned that the V.I. government will soon have to answer for its decisions in Washington, D.C.

“As the immediate relief and emergency response in the USVI shifts to a rebuild and long-term recovery phase, I will be consulted by many stakeholders in Washington and on Capitol Hill tasked with allocating and accounting for federal resources,” Plaskett wrote. “Any real or perceived lack of transparency or communication from your office on the specific needs and current gaps that might exist will only diminish individuals’ confidence in us and hamper our collective ability to provide the greatest immediate and long-term support to our people.”
