Senators OK amendment to pay past-due Guam Memorial Hospital retirement debt

Lawmakers on Thursday approved an appropriation to use $3 million in 2018 tax amnesty funds to pay for the past-due retirement contributions for Guam Memorial Hospital employees, but they weren't happy about it.

Vice Speaker Therese Terlaje, who is running for re-election, said she supported the amendment to the fiscal year 2019 budget, but said the $3 million appropriation doesn't solve the problem.

"It doesn't stop them from doing that tomorrow, from withholding retirement contributions again," Terlaje stated.

The Government of Guam Retirement Fund board of trustees in July filed a lawsuit against GMH for its failure to pay retirement contributions for its employees, preventing employees from retiring. The hospital has failed to remit contributions for pay periods dating back to April.
