Poll: Puerto Ricans Disillusioned with Politics Due to Rampant Corruption

Puerto Rico residents have increasingly lost interest in traditional politics as they believe a majority of state and municipal authorities as well as business executives are involved in corruption, according to a survey released Wednesday.

Approximately 44.3 percent of islanders believe that a majority of state or central government authorities are linked to acts of corruption, while another 16.7 percent think all of them are corrupt, according to Puerto Rico’s edition of the World Values Survey (WVS), which found that 40.6 percent of islanders believe that a majority of “local authorities,” presumably municipalities, are involved in corruption, while another 15.5 percent said all of them have been involved.

On the other hand, a majority of survey respondents expressed their trust in public service workers, with 56.8 percent saying that public service workers have “few or no links to corruption,” according to WVS, which also indicated that 68.4 percent have a similar opinion of journalists and the news media.

The local edition of WVS was carried out by a team of Sagrado Corazón University (SCU) students headed by Javier Hernández, dean of the university’s business school. The survey, validated by the Puerto Rico Institute of Statistics (PRIS), was done between May and November of last year and was based on a stratified poll of 1,127 island residents and has a margin of error of three percent, said Hernández, who discussed WVS data at an SCU conference Wednesday.
