UPR Union Goes on 24-Hour Strike, Says Interim President Should Step Down
Brotherhood of Non-Teaching Employees (HEEND by its Spanish acronym) President José Torres Rosario announced on Thursday that the union went on 24-hour work strike at the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) central administration headquarters in San Juan in ejection of the actions of Interim President Nivia Fernández.
Torres Rosario said Fernández “does not comply with the demands of the Financial Oversight and Management Board and the government, and now plans cuts of $512 million against the primary educational center in the country.”
“Nivia Fernández, Gov. Ricardo Rosselló Nevares and the Financial Oversight and Management Board should know that we will not allow them to destroy our university,” Torres Rosario said in a written statement. “They should get ready because the university community will oppose this until they desist from this absurd action.”
The HEEND membership approved a strike vote on Tuesday. The union’s board of directors will implement this mechanism when all other dialogue possibilities have been exhausted. The strike is one of the “mechanisms of struggle” that the HEEND will use, along with other university organizations and the civil society, “to prevent the destruction of the UPR.”
