Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumCNN: A decades-old feud looms over Biden and Warren in 2020
Like most of the Democratic candidates in the 2020 field, Warren has so far largely steered clear of commenting on -- let alone, attacking -- her rivals.
But when asked last week whether the former vice president was "too cozy" with Wall Street, the Massachusetts senator was unusually direct, noting that their "disagreement is a matter of public record."
"At a time when the biggest financial institutions in this country were trying to put the squeeze on millions of hardworking families who are in bankruptcy because of medical problems, job losses, divorce and death in the family, there was nobody to stand up for them," Warren said in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on the same day that Biden officially announced his candidacy.
And then, with a single sentence, Warren opened up a new chapter in the campaign: "I got in that fight because they just didn't have anyone, and Joe Biden was on the side of the credit card companies."

(3,764 posts)the criminal justice "reforms" he helped push through during the 80's and 90's. Creating the Drug Czar office, civil forfeiture, mandatory minimum sentences, the crack cocaine sentencing disparity, the RAVE act .. the whole ball of wax. He voted for all of it and even wrote some of it. He did help later to get some of the crack cocaine sentencing disparity rolled back, but there's still a disparity, only not as much.
Yeah, maybe Bernie Sanders voted for some of this, but he didn't write it - and Elizabeth Warren wasn't even in the Senate when that was going on.

Some Dems, including Biden, were in the 90's and even 2000's still trying to meet R's in the middle on issues of banking, bankruptcy reform, etc. Not Warren. She was a strong voice for the consumer, and that has pitted her against Biden for decades.

I just love the perpetual double standards for Sanders.
That said, Im rather tired of the presentism used on either candidate.
I remember clearly the media and GOP frightening the public with dire consequences for their kids who would be on drugs if we didnt imprison all the dealers selling them drugs on the play ground.
Its why school zones have 1000 ft drug free zones around them.
The media/GOP were selling the Democrats are soft on crime propaganda at the time in heaping spoonfuls and the public bought it hook line and sinker.

(37,648 posts)Not kissing women's heads, not the Thomas hearing. This bankruptcy bill he got passed. I remember when it passed. My mouth fell open when I heard or read it, because it was so harmful to the average citizen. They were no longer going to be able to get out from under crushing debt from medical bills. It just seemed so wrong and made no sense. It was okay to discharge your debt because you went on a spending spree at Macy's, but not because you got cancer?
Then I remembered that he was a senator for Delaware, the state where a lot of corporations register because the state is so friendly to corporations.
I don't remember that it was specifically tied to credit cards, but maybe it was.
I like Biden. But this is the biggest problem I have with him.

(10,565 posts)Is that her electability is tenuous. In this cycle that is the end all and be all. She made some early mistakes that would be problematic in the general. I dont think she would beat Trump. Its not right but thats my take.

(26,035 posts)...rather than the shortcomings of those I dont, but I side with Warren here; Bidens embrace of the Bush bankruptcy-reform law is a genuine black mark on his record for me. At that time, I was in pretty severe financial straits (fortunately, not anymore), and it was sickening for me to see any Democrat champion a law that had me thinking might well cost us everything we owned and leave us homeless, all for the benefit of the megabanks.

(25,183 posts)a lot. Joe shepherded a lot of Barack Obama's wish list through the 2009-2010 Congress, including the BFD of the ACA. It also included then-professor Warren's consumer finance protection legislation.

(6,709 posts)in truth it was far less of a BFD than it could and should have been. And maybe it's just me but I don't recall anyone in the administration doing much of anything while the ACA languished for MONTHS while Democratic Senators did everything but backflips to get even ONE Republican Senator on board--was that the "shepherding" to which you refer? Because if it was then it was a bust and nothing to brag about: not with a super majority in the House and 60 votes in the Senate.

(25,183 posts)was a triumph that exceeded what any prior administration ever could do. No, the GOP'ers did not sign on board, but just trying to get the Bernie Sanders wing of the party and the Blue Dogs to agree on something was an accomplishment. No, it wasn't perfect, but it was better than nothing.
Joe Biden is responsible for just about any legislative success that the Obama administration accomplished.

(58,785 posts)as legislators are all about are based on arriving at agreement on what's needed and how to do it. He's known for occasionally being too agreeable, she doesn't have that problem, but they've been working together for years.
I believe Bernie Sanders is the only person in the current Democratic senate caucus who'd really prefer to lose everything than compromise, but even for him that's not usually a problem in his work as a senator. Typically, his colleagues in leadership and on the various committees decide what's needed, study and negotiate what and how, and then write the legislation. When party leaders have steered it to conclusion, then a large majority, including Sanders, vote for it.
Senator Biden (when he was in the senate) and Senator Warren have been doing that for years. During campaigning, they of course emphasize differences to stand out in the minds of voters and skip the coming-together steps entirely, but not to be mislead by that.

I don't dislike Mr Biden, but it was a shameful performance. It was the kind of thing you see when someone is more interested in the sound of his own voice and uninterested in hearing another opinion.
