It annoys me when some young people poo-poo what we did and our struggles.
Civil rights, women's rights, protests, our leaders assassinated.. It was heart-breaking and scary.

(11,238 posts)I mean, Four Dead In Ohio. If he was as politically aware in the sixties as he's saying he was...where did he get that number??
And I grew up in that time too. In amongst the turmoil of the time, I was able to go to college without graduating with a mountain of debt. I don't know what the larger discussion was about, that this clip is from, but that is one ENORMOUS difference between me and kids now. Unlike Joe Biden, I have a HUGE amount of empathy for kids today.

I'm not writing a long-assed post about the problems I've seen with attitudes and demeanor, but I'm sure many can guess.
I'll add it's not ALL the kids. There are a few who warm my heart.

(82,383 posts)Maybe what he was getting at and still not right.
He's talking about the opportunities for women, the freedom since then. Of course he does not care about college debt, he even supported making it harder to bankrupt! If asked directly, he might understand that as a problem. Context was not including that.
We do have it a lot better - my generation was the next one and no one questioned women going into business, careers, and they were starting to be in leadership and now it has improved immensely. Despite the Dotard, it is now frowned upon to be a racist, homophobe and so on. His minions are the minority.

(37,648 posts)The opportunities available to women when I was young - today's young women would be shocked to hear it, if they even believed it. Especially if a woman lived in the deep south.
The hatred and vitriol that was directed at women who wanted the right to be engineers, scientists, or whatever field they wanted to work in, was mind boggling. The attitude that women should be paid less because they were worth less was widespread. Middle aged men could demand their wives not work, stay at home, have kids, cook & clean house. Then could leave her in their middle aged years, and complain if he had to pay alimony. Alimony was because she had no skills or experience to earn a decent income on her own. He walked away with everything: the income, the job, most of the job benefits, the friends.
I don't understand young women who don't vote. They don't realize how quickly women and other minorities could be relegated to second class again. Look at the restrictions being imposed on abortion rights, voting rights, etc.

This is why Sanders is NOT on my list for primary candidates. As far as I am concerned he hopes to gain the nomination by dividing Democrats, and I don't want that in a candidate for the primaries
All other candidates have my potential vote in the primaries.
Currently, I favor Biden and Harris, and have donated to both their campaigns, but there are others who I also view favorably
I appreciate your concern Otto. Oh, welcome to DU by the way... ..
The fact is every candidate is going to be coming out by foreign and domestic attack lists, especially the one's they believe are the most threat against trump

I love the real, proactive younger generations, but they are making a huge mistake acting as though their rights always existed or came from nowhere. We can teach them if theyd just ask.

(8,144 posts)True, Vietnam combat vets have not, statistically, been long-lived. Those who survived were as a group far more productive than myths perpetuated about them suggested. Many returned to fight against the war along with civilians, and as numbers swelled, the public outcry changed policy. As well, before then, many young people took great risks to join the civil rights movement in the field in the South and on campuses across the U.S.
Old women today were yesterdays Trail Blazers in all phases of the movement towards equality.
It is an utter shame that older voices are discounted and that while most other forms of discrimination are censured, ageism is almost proudly declared on this forum and others.
Fortunately, a large percentage of actually young people do not dismiss their older fellow liberals; rather, it seems those years out from college tend to.
No, the most significant changes in our political, social, and economic landscape did not emerge yesterday.
Most important, if we are to preserve and build on these changes, it will take uniting together to do it. That means all constituencies, all voting communities.

(10,823 posts)that Joe Biden had a target on his back because he is the threat to the political aspirations of the Left and the Right. He will be bombarded, particularly after this past week's polling.
That will be Biden's challenge to deflect the slings and arrows and get his message across.
As for the first selectively cropped video, it's obviously meant to paint Biden in the worst possible light. Open the video up and it could, in fact, be used as a campaign ad.
His team and supporters will need to be watchful because this is only the beginning. The important thing is to swat these faux attacks down as soon as possible in the manner that Alpaca De Guerra does. Nate Silver is correct--much of what the Left & Right are churning at the moment is not having the desired effect. If anything, the attacks have boosted Biden's numbers.

(10,823 posts)Yes, he must be able to deflect the attacks to beat Trump. But Biden must also be able to gore the Trumpster where he lives, make him bleed votes and support. Personally, I think Joe Biden is perfectly capable of doing both while offering solid qualifications and readiness for the job.
