Joe Biden says LGBT+ rights will be his number one priority if he wins 2020 election

Maya Oppenheim | @mayaoppenheim |

Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden has said enshrine LGBT+ protections into the nation’s labour and civil rights law would be his main priority if he wins the White House.

Passing the Equality Act “will be the first thing” he would “ask to be done” he said during a keynote address to hundreds of activists at the Human Rights Campaign’s annual Ohio gala on the first day of Pride Month.

The Equality Act would expand the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Fair Housing Act to ban discrimination in employment, housing, jury selection and public accommodations based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

Great that he will immediately move to codify these rights and put a stop to legalizing RW persecution.

Bad if some believe the poor wording in this reporting. This is part of an immensely important agenda to protect all of us and our nation from fascism, with the targeting of LGBTQ citizens among the earliest, faint portents of its viciousness.

It is possible to read the history of this country as one long struggle to extend the liberties established in our Constitution to everyone in America. Molly Ivins

I know that the states control elections, but there needs to be a push for paper ballots. If states decline, the voting machines need to be randomly, independently audited. If machines are found to be pre-programmed to flip votes, that election is nullified.

Voting is important, who counts the votes is more important. Plus there needs to be a movement away from gerrymandering. Democrats are getting more votes in Pa. where I vote yet we elect more Republicans because of gerrymandered districts.

It does not follow (non-sequitur)
Description: When the conclusion does not follow from the premises. In more informal reasoning, it can be when what is presented as evidence or reason is irrelevant or adds very little support to the conclusion.

Claim A is made. Evidence is presented for claim A. Therefore, claim C is true.

Example #1: People generally like to walk on the beach. Beaches have sand. Therefore, having sand floors in homes would be a great idea!

I will vote for - and donate to, and volunteer on behalf of - whoever gets the Democratic nomination.

Right now, I am in Buttigieg's camp because he is speaking about the urgency of the climate crisis - not change, crisis - and he is talking about re-purposing the military and generating jobs and wealth and...

I'd like to see more focus on trade, immigration, universal health care and rebuilding our alliances.

"I actually like Dick Cheney, for real," Biden said at the time. "I get on with him. I think he's a decent man."

Dick Cheney, who told Sen. Lehey to go fuck himself.

a legislative priority in his administration.

The negativity sounds somewhat familiar as when Black Lives Matter came on the national scene, and some were quick to diminish it by saying "all lives matter"

right. It's important, but...…………….

and some of my best friends are...…...

When a candidate is talking to a Civil Rights group, what would one expect that candidate to talk about?

Of course making something a legislative priority does NOT exclude making other things a legislative priority also, but I guess some think that some can't walk and chew gum at the same time

One or two words can drastically alter the way a statement is interpreted. I like and support Biden, but let's be honest, if the statement falls flat on DU then it's a non-starter for the general population (which tends to be further to the right).

Anyway, I think our number 1 priority should be securing elections and making sure all citizens can vote so that everyone can have confidence in our election results. Nothing else matters if we can't get that part right, because each time the rethugs steal an election or disenfranchise voters, they undo everything we did anyway. It's time to lock it down so we can protect our progress going forward.

Basically he's sending the message that he plans to carry on where Barack left off (remember he kicked off with the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay act in 2009) and going even further back, to 1964 where JFK left off (the 1964 Civil Rights act was sent to Congress in August 1963). And that's a pretty encouraging signal!

In the list things I'm worried about most, LGBTQ+ rights are there. Not at the top though. I'm more concerned about climate change, health care (which includes a lot of LGBTQ+ issues), infrastructure, and others.

The violence and hatred are a symptom of a larger issue. There is also the matter of repairing our relationship with our allies.

This is pandering.

Its not and it shouldnt be. As bad as we have it (some more than others), the illegally detained migrants have it far far worse. The unarmed black men and women being shot by police have it worse, most are dead. The victims of rampant gun violence have it worse.

Look, I do like Biden but on the surface, his statement makes no sense other than for it to he pandering.
