Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumWhat we are seeing right now from Elizabeth Warren is nothing short of brilliance
I have been thinking a lot today about how to say this. I'm not too great with word-smithing when I have strong emotions rolling around in my gut.
But Elizabeth Warren is doing something now that seems like it should be so simple but apparently is not because no one does it.
She links the big picture to individual lives.
It seems like it should be easy but I have not heard it like this before. Not even from Obama.
HER VISION FOR AMERICA IS FULLY REALIZED. I need to say that again. HER VISION IS FULLY REALIZED.
She has linked all components -- data, numbers, studies, laws, history, policies, structures, values, beliefs -- and produced a flowing, elegant, profound, brilliant vision that is fully realized and complete in all components and that resonates at the deepest core. From the big idea, to the bottom line nuts and bolts. From the vast role of the federal government, to the daily life of a single working mom.
She sees how all the pieces fit together. She knows where the levers are. She knows how this vast system relates to our most basic and fundamental progressive values. And most importantly - she knows how to express it in a way that not just makes people understand, but that moves them.
We don't try to squeak out our progressive values from an intractable system. WE START WITH THE VALUES AT THE TOP AND MAKE THE SYSTEM SERVE US. We should not live like we are at the mercy of the system. We must MAKE the system that serves us best.
She uses simple words. She uses metaphors. She leads with values. She is authentic. She does all the things cognitive science says are critical for effective communication. But I believe she does it naturally, not as a part of road map she read in a communications book.
It's fine to say let's have voting rights - because democracy!
But she is very far beyond that.
When she tells the family story of her mom going out to get a job when her father was sick, saw how critical it was that that job generate the money to keep her family afloat..... WHO DOES THE GOVERNMENT WORK FOR. A government that sets the minimum wage is a government that determines if a family like hers sinks or swims. If the government doesn't work to help someone like her mother, then who does it work for. "The minimum wage needs to ensure that a mama and a baby can make it."
She may be the one candidate who actually seems to have DONE SOME HOMEWORK to prepare for her run. To have developed her own policies from her own extensive knowledge and heart, and fully realized them from top to bottom. Fully integrated them up and down and across. From vision all the way down to the words of legislation.
The fear I have is that the media - the Chuck Todds, the Mark Halperins, the Ken Vogels, the Maggie Habermans - will treat her like shit while they fawn all over trump and destroy her chance to win. Just like they did to Hillary.

(42,770 posts)Here are some of the behaviors Halperin was accused of in 2017, by several of his former co-workers: propositioning women colleagues for sex. Grabbing ones breasts against her will. Masturbating in front of another. Pressing his erect penis against another. Requiring one woman to sit on his lapwhile his penis was erectbefore he would give her the piece of information she needed to do her job. Calling co-workers late at night, with conversations that were sexual in nature and unwanted. One woman said that Halperin had violently attacked her, throwing her against a plate-glass window and pinning her arms to its surface. She also said that, after she rebuffed him, he threatened to ruin her career.
Halperin, CNN reported at the time, denied that he had masturbated in front of anyone, that he physically assaulted anyone, or that he threatened anyone in the way described in this story.

(53,410 posts)I also watched the crowd. In the beginning most of them looked either skeptical or neutral. When she and Chris Hayes were sitting with a group who were able to ask questions every one of them looked like they werent going to be taken in by no politician. By the end of the hour they were all visibly relaxed and smiling and even laughing.
When Rachel had Chris Hayes on it showed him still in the full town hall with Elizabeth Warren talking enthusiastically with a group of smiling attendees.
I would love to vote for her if she gets the nomination. She has passion and she has substantive answers and she is very up front about everything. Shes not holding back.

(9,529 posts)which we sorely need. Hilary voters should love having a strong, smart, articulate and experienced woman capable of making mincemeat out of Trump and Sanders voters find her strong stances against corporations and eagerness to fight for students, the poor and working class people to be suitably progressive--and she connects with a broad range of voters much as Sanders did.
Her sole "weakness" is the Pocahontas label but Trump will come up with an insulting term for anyone the Dems put up against him, so that's really small potatoes. If he slams her over that she should bring up his abysmal record on Native American issues from decimating healthcare to backing destruction of Native American lands with oil pipelines and so forth, and promise that she will respect Native American sovereignty and work to raise tribal members out of poverty, as well as fight for protections of Native American women who are abused at alarming rates.

(3,918 posts)that elections are not won on issues and proposals. They are won on trust. Most voters vote for the candidate they most trust to make the right decisions on issues and policy, without prejudging what those decisions will be. And for most of us that is probably a good strategy: after all, they are the "pros from Dover" and we are not.
However!
Warren seems to be making it work. "I've got a plan for that" is a phrase that many politicians have given us. Recall, Nixon had a plan to end the Vietnam war, he said, and the Pubs have a plan to "save social security" -- OK, save it by destroying it, but that's what they say. There is good reason to distrust "I've got a plan for that."
The difference is: Warren delivers. There is no "secret plan." Her plans are clear, complete, and often based on the work of economists who are among the best of the current generation. (That's my professional opinion, and I teach that stuff.) That's not to say I agree with every detail -- I would make the wealth tax rate a bit higher and ... well, never mind.
By making "I've got a plan for that" her leitmotif, and delivering again and again, she is getting attention and -- perhaps! -- building the trust she needs to actually get elected.

(15,301 posts)I was sick after 2016. It took me a while to recover from that. I decided to keep myself reserved this time around and not get as personally invested for that reason, and Elizabeth Warren is making that hard. She is a closer match for me, politically and philosophically. I watch her and listen to her and think, fuck it. It's worth risking the heartbreak. This country needs her.

(58,785 posts)and I love that in candidates.
Hillary's solutions ranged more broadly and could be big, but were designed to sound reassuringly "within normal," while Elizabeth's tend to be more iconoclastic. Two approaches, but both the kind of people you want in charge of putting a neglected nation in disarray in good order.
That reminds me, the city of Stockton, California has just started its own experiment in a universal basic income. $500/month to 130 residents for 18 months with no conditions to meet beyond allowing themselves to be studied. We are in a moment where big ideas are important and politically people are ready for them, Natalie Foster, co-chair of The Economic Security Project.
Interestingly, Warren hasn't stated a position on a UBI, while Hillary has said she regrets she didn't add a UBI to her agenda in 2016. But Warren's the one who has to get elected this time, and she's hardly the only candidate who apparently feels this subject has more weight than lift.

(1,500 posts)Ill vote for whichever Presidential candidate has a D next to their name.
But Elizabeth Warren has got it going on.
She is talking about programs that would actually change the economic playing field. What she is proposing in great detail would work and, most importantly, is politically possible if the Democrats can get the Senate back.
She isnt trafficking in vague promises nor is she talking about the impossible.
If the media stops ignoring her and starts attacking her then the game is truly on.

I have been watching Senator Warren for a while now, Whether deliberate or not - I think not given her life experiences. She is every working mother. She dresses in primary colors, in simple fabrics. nothing fussy or complex. She wears clothes to move with her, clothes for working. No designer dresses or suits. Straight off the rack.
Very little jewelry. Maybe earrings, a watch.
Her hair style is easy care. Run a comb or brush through it, maybe add a barrett, and she is good to go.
No bells and whistles. She has a job to do and this is who she is. I like her. I admire and respect her.

(6,617 posts)was clearer than any I have heard. Shes got it down so she can make people understand that its only at $50,000,001 that you start to pay the additional $0.02 in tax. For years, Ive wanted a candidate or politician to be able to explain it so concisely that any simpleton can understand that shes not advocating raising taxes on all of the dollars that the high-earners bring in.
See? My explanation of what I liked about her arguments was much more rambling than her explanation of the proposed wealth tax.

(48,736 posts)depends on whether you want to elect a policy wonk.
My guess is that she'd be doing better in the polls if more people thought being a policy wonk was an all-important qualification for POTUS.
Because I don't think there is any doubt that she's the policy wonkiest of the candidates. And if there is any doubt, I'm sure she'll come up with a plan to eradicate it...
I like Warren. I just don't think she's as electable as Biden.
