I think that was the highlight of Biden's speech. Great line that could become his campaign slogan.
I thought his speech was excellent but not quite as good as his speech in Philadelphia when he first announced he was running. Joe looked more serious and concerned today than I've ever seen him before, probably just a reflection of how concerned he is for future of the country. I hope he was feeling okay.

(22,328 posts)really ignores the fact that there was still a lot of work to be done even in years we remember as "better." Biden would do well to consider language that implies "getting back on track toward something" rather than "reverting" or "going back" to something.

(13,390 posts)The US is the only American nation.
There are millions of Americans who are from Central America and South America.
I think it started with Teddy Roosevelt when he gave a xenophobic, racist speech proclaiming US citizens are the only real Americans.
It's an ugly point of view couched in the white supremacy that defined and continues to prevail in the US.

(13,390 posts)I have talked with people who would like the language reflecting their continental origin to be part of the lexicon. It's a tradition I wish politicians would abandon because it has the narcissistic, nationalistic ring of American exceptionalism.

(58,785 posts)SO true. Of course, we'd want the relatively healthy government of pre-reaganism America tweaked for today. To make that happen is OUR job, of course.
