Warren Passes Sanders in National Poll for First Time

There are still six months until voting starts and two weeks until we even have the first debates, but the dynamic of the Democratic race is trending away from being a Joe Biden–Bernie Sanders mano a mano into something a little more like an open competition. The latest evidence is an Economist/YouGov national poll that puts Biden’s lead over the rest of the field—which was consistently in the 20- to 30-point range after he announced his campaign in late April—at 10 points. Also noteworthy is who’s in second place behind the former VP: Elizabeth Warren, not Sanders. The top five:

• Biden, 26 percent
• Warren, 16 percent
• Sanders, 12 percent
• Pete Buttigieg, 8 percent
• Kamala Harris, 6 percent

It’s the first time since she entered the race that Warren has led Sanders by more than the margin of error in a national poll. (Update, 1:15 p.m.: A just-released Link to tweet
" target="_blank">Monmouth poll of Nevada, whose caucus is after New Hampshire and before South Carolina, also has Warren in second place. It’s the first time she’s been ahead of Sanders in an early-voting state.) A Quinnipiac national survey released earlier this week, meanwhile, had it as Biden 30, Sanders 19, and Warren 15; the latest poll in Iowa (which is still the first state to vote) put Biden at 24 percent support with Sanders, Warren, and Buttigieg all trailing him by 8-10 points. So: Biden still leading, but by less than before, with the rest of the pack catching up to Bernie. (And for what it’s worth, while Kamala Harris hasn’t been in a lot of news cycles recently, she’s still solidly in that second-tier pack and still seems to be in pretty good shape overall—39 percent of Democrats told YouGov that they’re at least considering voting for her, which is more than said the same for either Buttigieg or Sanders.)

That is a sad position for people to take, especially if they want the most progressive nominee possible.

The misuse of what a progressive reminds me of the conflict between rightwing evangelicals and evangelicals who truly behave as Christian in everything they do. The first group has grabbed the term and treat anyone who is not a rightwing evangelical as non Christian, to me, that is how the people that are proclaiming themselves progressive and setting purity standards are behaving.

She is a quality candidate, loaded with policy ideas. Think she has managed to shake off the Pocahontas attacks (although Trump will likely reanimate the nonsense) by working extraordinarily hard to get her name and positions out there as well as explaining how she intends to implement and fund a myriad of programs. People respond to that type of rigor and energy.

She's worked for the uptick. So, good one on her!

I've been thinking about electability today, and how, on DU, Biden is perceived as the most electable because people say he is. He is the safe choice in the face of the crazy reality star that says stupid, inflammatory stuff hourly. Plus, a few polls have him in the lead, even though a debate hasn't happened nor has anyone voted.

It's time for a woman to be president. A woman will be the most electable. You don't believe me? Hillary Clinton received the second most votes in our country's history, and she was shut out because the antiquated and biased electoral college caused the reality guy who received fewer votes to win.

There are only a couple of states to flip. We learned from 2016.

Warren has a solid series of policy proposals -- real substance -- and describes how to pay for each of them. She addresses the concerns that most Democrats and Americans say are important: the environment, healthcare and education. Perhaps not in that order. On the other hand, crazy, month-breathing conservatives who are fine with children locked in cages in concentration camps will never be someone we would want to attract. Spoiler alert: they are not reachable and we shouldn't care what they think. Or what their batshit crazy leader says.

Warren also has one of the strongest ground games in the country right now, and has been quietly building up a local presence over the past few months. This infrastructure will be activated in due time. If she is rising in polls today, imagine what it will be like when Warren's army is unleashed.

True, she did earn a stupid nickname from Trump, and that must make her untouchable in the democratic field because Trump will tremble in fear at running against Biden because reasons. I'm not sure what those reasons are. But I'm sure they're important and they will arrest Trump's crazy and attract some of the rabid and racist voters that are Trump's base.

I've seen threads on DU, and I have written a few myself that I wish I had not, that propose a woman needs in the VP slot for Biden to balance the ticket, you see. It was sexist of me to think that way. A woman belongs at the top of the ticket. Women have been told they need to play second fiddle to men for most of history. Aren't we done with thinking that way? It is time to be bold and brave.

So, why not a Warren/Harris ticket or vice versa? Can you imagine? Both would be wonderful and formidable against Trump and Pence. I know that Biden is sturdy and affable and all, but I would like to challenge us to think bigger and hold true to our ideals as a progressive party.

If I were to vote in a presidential
