FYI, the times are "ambitious" - Hampton is 30 miles from Londonderry, but Londonderry and Nashua are only a few miles apart.

If you go to a potluck, you gotta load up a plate, you know. And you have to eat a little of everything, so you can compliment the food. Poor Joe!

During one lean year when I was living the low life in Santa Barbara, CA, I made a habit of attending church potlucks suppers around town. Every week, the paper listed those potlucks on its religion page. I put on my suit and just showed up as a nice, polite young man. Nice young single men weren't expected to bring a dish, you see. I was always very graciously received by the ladies at the church and often heard things like the quote above. It was one way to thrive. Large wedding receptions, too, were generally OK to visit, as long as you were polite, dressed well, and didn't do anything unusual.
